NOT praying has allowed me to do things I like to do, instead of sitting in church and/or praying as you do.

Your OCD and depression felt better because you felt like your prayer was doing something. God is a convenience that humans invented to make life seem less futile. You only feel better because you feel like you've passed on your own blame to some benevolent creator. It's all in your head, just like your OCD and depression.

Through very hard times in my life. Christianity is a religion, a faith, a belief in something greater than ourselves. It can not be proven scientifically. If it could, people would stop questioning if their was a God.

I know that my answer is vague. But in times of trial and tribulation God has been there for me. Even when I didn't think he was. Even when I felt like I had lost my faith, taking a deep breath and saying that first prayer in a long time, lifted a weight off my shoulders.

I am sorry that my answer is not more scientific. I wish I could offer you "proof" Sometimes that is what people need. I guarantee that you will you will get lots of answers to this question. I just hope that people realize that you are asking this for conversation sake, and not to piss people off, so they don't trash you.

Good luck.

There is scientific proof that prayer changes things. There is a movie that was on the science channel where glasses of water were prayed for.. One was love, one was hate, I can't remember the other two. Even though all of the water was poured from the same place. under a microscope the water was changed on a molecular level.
Love crystals appeared beautiful, while hate was green and ugly.
Many doctors allow patients to be prayed for, on many occasions symptoms improve. If not for anything else, Prayer re leaves stress for those that are troubled and those that hate can give their anger to God and remember it no more, into a sea of forgetfulness.

I prayed the first time in Viet Nam It was not like the movies, bullets and bombs were every where, people were dying and wreathing in pain all around me, I took three bullets in my rifle stock and my front site was shot off , with no site of the enemy and had no Idea what to say but the old saying is true, there are no atheist in a foxhole.
As to what prayer has done for me.

I have done things in my life that I can not bare to remember, the memory always caused tearful pain but after giving it to God in prayer, instead of beating my chest in self disgust, I am able to Love and help others and happiness is mine.

The prayer of a righteous man can do much.

Operational science is the continued observance of a repeatable act. Since some things like Origins, coincidence, and answers to prayer, are not repeatable, they cannot very well fit into the scientific arena.
Test performed under scientific guidelines involving prayer, has shown a consistency,of improvement for prayed for subjects, whether they knew of the prayer or not. The initial evidence suggest that theoretically, prayer works.

When I was 12 yrs old, I prayed and prayed that I would hit three homeruns that year in Little League baseball. Don't know why I picked that number, just thought it was a good number, not too many to be greedy and not too few to seem lucky I guess. Anyways, that season I ended up with three homeruns. Yeah so what.... The kicker is I hit like five shots off the top of the fence also. Couple inches they'd been HRs also. That was my proof and that's all I need. Other things since have happened, but that was the clincher for me.

That's not an inflamatory questions that's an idiots question. Prayer is a belief that some higher power will answer your request, you cannot 'prove' it was God, how do we know that if we pray to get the funds we need for the car we need to have, and we win 200 bucks in the lottery that it wasn't just luck? Some things cannot be proven, they just are. Take your science elsewhere, it's useless to place fact on today's lifestyle, there is always an exception

Prayer has offered me inner peace and strength. It has taken fear out of my life, I understand that those things are intangible and cannot be measured by anyone. Everyday there are hundreds of miracles that have no scientific explanation, yet everyone can agree they happen. If you do not accept that there is a power that is greater than yourself, it is your choice. But, I would like to ask you a question. Why do you find it necessary, perhaps even pleasurable to ask "inflammatory" questions of Christians. Is that going to PROVE you are smarter, and can you cite scientific evidence of that fact?

You don't have to go to church to pray. The word says that where to or more are gathered in my name I will be there. If you are alive that should be proof enough. Everything around you is proof just open your eyes and your heart and you will see it. Where do you think that everything came from? I do not go to church and sit beside people that I don't know every Sunday but I do know that God exist and that with God all things are possible. I don't push my beliefs on anyone. I have many beliefs not just Christianity. There is however only one God.

Though i do not practice my religion any longer, prayer was a form of meditation for me, and it brought peace of mind. It slowed my thoughts and helped me to focus. This is not an inflammatory question to me, but if you asked it with that in mind, why would you try to inflame Christians? Obviously, you are asking this in a less than friendly tone. Why? Has "prayer" ever hurt you?

PS You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you just might find, you get what you need!!!!!!

Life gives each of us a lot of twists and turns along the way--some of them are not fun! From my experience, when big problems come--and they most certainly will in each of our lives--we can choose to despair or choose to hope. It is Faith which provides hope for the darkest parts of my journey through life.

There is no way that I can adequately explain the phenomena of prayer --and the Real Prescence --to someone who does not choose to acknowledge God. I can only say that the works of mercy that happen in large ways (sometimes) --and in very small ways (more often) in my life are answers to prayers.

Yes, life is a journey. Faith is a gift. Perhaps one day you will open your heart and mind and realize that there is Something beyond "science" or "logic" that is at work in our world. Perhaps one day on your life's journey, maybe when you least expect it, you will realize that you, too, are called to accept Faith as a gift, too.

Until then, I and others will pray for you.
