Gnostic is derived from the Greek word Gnossis, which means knowledge. The Gnostics believed that we could all approach God ourselves, without using priests, saints, icons, etc as go betweens. In most churches, you are encouraged not to pray yourself, but to light candles, go to the priest, etc. Gnostics were basically wiped out so that the Roman church could gain control over all of Christendom. If you believe that you can pray directly to God with no intermediary, then you are practicing a main belief of the Gnostics

the word is Agnostic and people who say they are agnostic believe that ultimately they were created by someone or something but there is no proff nor will there ever be any proof that this person or thing does or doesn't exist. Its not that agnostics don't believe in God it's that they are skeptical because there is no actual proof. Atheists on the other hand don't have any beliefs whatsoever except for the concept that God does not exist, agnostics and atheists are commonly confused or grouped in together but they are both genuine beliefs in and of themselves

gnostics subscribe to a philosophical model(s) that offer a logical way of understanding the infinite's connection to the finite. (cosmology to cosmogeny).
they are under the impression that Gnosticism is the esoteric (hidden truth) heart of all the world's spiritual systems.
gnostics have a threefold understanding of "God" (Bythos, Demiurge, Redeemer). (see Valentinus)
gnosticism offers liberation philosophy, in both theory (kaballah- sephiroth) and utilitarian practice (kundalini yoga)- for example. this is based around "learning your lesson' (attaining Gnosis) and breaking free from the cycle of rebirth into the realm of suffering (samsara).
gnostics reject athiesm. (and is the reason why religious traditions take such a hardline view toward athiests- like in Islam, for example)
gnostics are generally elitists. knowing that not everyone has the capacity or drive to understand the complexity of these teachings.
both for those who do....it provides them with the keys to unlock a whole world of understanding, on all sorts of levels.

Agnostics are skeptics who need better argument and persuasion from a religious ideal group. They're different from atheists.
