Deep question. Maybe certain politicians feel that scientists are "playing God" by using cells from certain tissues (embryos) to grow organs for transplants or to help develop therapies for certain diseases (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, etc). They also may feel that this will led to "embryo factories" for the sole purpose of providing tissues and organs for people or eventually lead to cloning a human. In addition, some consider the removal of the embryos "killing a human". As a scientist I think approving funding for this type research will in affect create a panel of experts that will set guidelines or "checks and balances" to ensure that exploitation of embryos or tissues does not happen. On a side not I think it is quite amusing that as we get older we are in favor of things that make our quality of life better. For instance, family members of a certain former president who didn't approve of stem cell research funding wanted it once they found out the ex-president had Alzheimer's and that stem cell research could help him.

People against stem cell research think that the scientist are playing the role that God is only meant to play. With particular emphasis on totipotent stem cells.

*** Totipotent stem cells are produced from the fusion of an egg and sperm cell. Cells produced by the first few divisions of the fertilized egg cell are also totipotent. These cells can differentiate into embryonic and extraembryonic cell types.

They believe that this research kills the unborn child thus taking a life that God gave us.

I would ask that we determine when a cell can be called a living being? I don't think that the sex of the potential living being can be determined at this stage. If not, then I would be inclined to say that it is not a living being at this time.

However, we should approach it with a more open question. What can we determine from this stage of the process of creating a being?

the whole idea of stem cell research is creating in a petry dish a human being before they start developing into anything bigger than a pea and then using the stem cells created from that to do research. Therefore there is the whole idea of playing god (giving life and taking it away when you start growing these cells, which would eventually turn into a human if allowed to continue growing)

Are you asking why this has become a religious debate? The religious question has to do with protecting life--all life--but especially life that cannot speak for itself. From a religious perspective destroying one life to save another is not a good trade. The question becomes not does stem cell research (from the stem cells of fetuses) offer promise for the cures of disease, but is the fetus that is destroyed for research alive and killed for the sake of research?

God has absolutely NOTHING to do with Stem Cell Research but you will never convince his appointed messenger and GEEZUS wanna-be, George Bush of that.

If you believe in god then you must believe he made stem cells for humans to work with.

well, God is for Stem Cell Research becuase it can help save lives
some people think he is against it because they think the embryos which they come from have souls, they dont have any proof of this but that doesn;t stop them from imposing laws that prevent the technology that can save the lives of people who actually have evidence that they are people

Primo: There is no deity whatsoever.

Secundo: The deity concept has nothing to do, and shouldn't be considered as having anything to do with stem cell research.

plenty.
stem cell research takes a fetus or embryo and kills it to save someones own deficient cells. a life that would be ended is not in God's plan.

God created all souls. Embryos have life. Killing an embryo is simply murder.
