I can't give you any advice about pain remedies.
But I know about a manual one-time treatment called Atlasprofilax that definitely does reduce the pressure on the discs and - with some luck - might help to get the cause away.
I have experienced the same treatment for other symptoms, and the effect is simply amazing.
Just - the treatment is available in California and Europe only (well, probably will be otherwhere in the US soon). It's really worth travelling far, and the costs are less than 200 Dollars.

My mom has this and can't stand it. As for me, I have a
herniated disk... and the only thing that alleviated the pain was
biking. I know, sounds crazy. But the exercise cut off the
pinched nerve that was causing me pain down my buttocks and
leg.
Also, I can't cross my legs, run or jump. So no over exerting
myself when playing with my kids.
Hope I've been of some help. Please be careful with
medications, you wouldn't want to start have stomach
problems. I take Tylenol when I do feel discomfort, but try
and skip a day, with no more than 4 a day.
Although, floor stretching (on your back with legs stretched out,
then rotating bent legs together side to side - holding for 10 to 20
secs per side) a couple of times... every morning and night.
It's the best medicine for me.
Take Care

My husband has had it for about 15 years and now he's on Percorcet (but has had his spinal vertebrae replaced and has a nerve disease also). Try the vicodin cut in 1/2 or 1/4 first, then work up from there, only when you need it. I would try heating pads, heat/massage pads for your chairs, warm baths, maybe some Glucosamine/chondroitin (you can get it at Walmart). I'm sorry for all you're going through, it's a miserable thing. Good luck!

You may be able to find some relief from a pain management facility. They use things like biofeedback and tens units. Another thing that helps some people is to relieve the pressure on the disk - by using traction, stretching or even hanging upside down. I wouldn't try any of these things without proper supervision though! You would not want to do something that could make the injury worse or even cause permanent damage or paralysis!

You should consult with a pain specialist, they have such new and innovating procedures that I am sure you will find the help you seek. My family member has degenerative disc disease and the doctors prescribed a rhizotomy procedure. That is where the nerves actually get burned in order to relieve the pain. When it is done the procedure will last 6-8 months before you have to repeat it. It has reduced their pain medication intake over half. Blessings and best wishes =)

My mom has degenerative disk disease and she goes to a chiropractor for it. He keeps everything aligned correctly and there are physical therapists who do muscle stimulation and massage. She was once told that she would have to have surgery but the chiropractic work has prolonged the need for surgery and she's doing great. Yes, every once in a while she will have a flare up and need some pain medications, but for that, I would consult a pain center as others have suggested. She has used Clonazepam to release muscle spasms and help her sleep. Ice packs work wonders. Just don't move in any way that you know will trigger pain, if you can help it.

ahh...damn.
I got run over by a car (literally) and my back is all messed up. I was going to say Ultram because that's what has worked best for me.
I take it with a multivitamin first thing in the morning 200mg, extended release. It's not perfect (far from it), but it's by far the best I've found that still allows me to function on a day-to-day basis.
I'd say to give it another shot (higher MG. ER) if you haven't tried that yet.

If you are into holistic treatment....get Certo liquid fruit pectin. One tablespoon in 8oz of juice every single day. I've done this for years, and it really does help maintain the joints and slows the degenerative process.

the Doctors told me you have to learn to live with it. I take pain meds but irritate my stomach if take to many. try heating pad. If you sleep on back put a pillow under your knees. Sleep on your side put pillow between your knees. Go to .. back.com... try some of the exercises they help relieve pain a little too. I really don't know what else. But it is terrible pain to deal with. good luck!
