First you should pick up a Dog annual USA or Canada magazine, and go to the breed directory. There will be a list of dog breeds and thier information. What they were originally bred for, size, excercise needed, grooming requirements,... etc. etc.... Decide which dog is the most suitable for you and/or family.
WHen you have narrowed your decision down to few breeds of interest to you, Contact a breeder in your area.
There are also breed clubs with members who would love to educate you on thier breeds. (people LOVE talking about heir dogs.) Dog shows,..... etc.
Let the breeder know that you are researching getting a dog and would like to ask about thier breed and whether it is suitable for your lifestyle.
There are many options Rescue from a rescue organization that deals with specific breeds, female retired from breeding.
Although a dog is always work, sometimes adult dogs are more suitable for certain people.
There are also many questions to ask your breeder to make sure your puppies are going to be healthy, good temperament and your breeder is educated enough to asnswer any questions you may have.
Finding the right dog takes alot of work, as it should this will be the new member of your family.
A shelter is a great place to get one as the volunteers are trrained to help you find one that fits with your lifestyle.
check out this website for more information and questions on how to find a breeder

This is a comment for b.w.
If you work in dog rescue and training you should be used to educating people and answering these questions.
alot of people dont know how to care for thier dogs,
I do my part by educating well meaning people without
judgement because there is no such thing as a stupid question. Especially given you work with dogs, you should be embarrassed by your response

Ask your parents for one; find a stray dog on the street and adopt it; go to the local pound and adopt one; look in the paper for people giving away or selling puppies and call the number and ask for one; go to the pet store and buy one; ask your neighbors and friends if they know of anyone who wants to give you a dog....

go to the humane shelter and pick a dog that u like, these poor dogs have to be chosen to go to a nice home...cuz if they stay in shelters to long and not get adopted they will put them to sleep that is with the older dogs, or u can go to the puppy side and get one u want to see them grow and live long with you.

This can not be stressed enough! GO to the local shelter! Always get your animals from there. Save a life!
For every animal who dies in a shelter euthanasia room, there is a human outside the walls of that shelter responsible for its death.
Shelter workers do the dirty work, for community members who continue to breed despite overpopulation, who surrender their animals, dump their guilt, for a problem they created themselves.

Check you're local shelters, rescue groups, ASPCA,SPCA, www.petfinder.org, your local vets office might know of someone who is trying to place a pup, or adult dog. I would stay away from pet shops because most of the pups in there are from puppy mills. Good luck.

If you have to ask you probably wouldn't know how to care for it either. Go to Target or Walmart and buy a stuffed animal.
