My little girl was really ill for three weeks (possibly viral infection) and in the last two has developed some strange symptoms/behaviour.
She wakes at night screaming and as soon as she is given her pacifier drops back unconscious, she doesn't quickly go back to sleep, she drops straight down as if she was never awake.
She is off her food and fluids, the doctor wants to test her for diabetes but she has the opposite symptoms, her diapers are rarely damp recently.
She has also started having screaming/crying fits in the day where she we can't even make eye contact with her as she cries for 20mins+. During this time she will thrash around and gets very red and sweaty.
After these screaming/crying episodes she is exhausted and is sleeping 18 hours+ each day.
We will be taking her to a pediatrician as our doctor is no use at all, we can't get there until tommorrow so would love any information that may put our mind at ease until then as we are getting very worried, thanks

I asked here not beacuse I think everyone is a doctor but because there could be some chance that other parents or carers have children with the same symptoms.
As always with YA, it is my responsibility to sift through some of the great advice and weed out the foolish. Colic!! at 16 month?

The main symptoms are the same as in adults. They tend to come on over a few weeks:
thirst
weight loss
tiredness
frequent urination.
Symptoms that are more typical for children include:
tummy pains
headaches
behaviour problems.
Sometimes diabetic acidosis occurs before diabetes is diagnosed, although this happens less often in the UK due to better awareness of the symptoms to look out for.
Doctors should consider the possibility of diabetes in any child who has an otherwise unexplained history of illness or tummy pains for a few weeks.
If diabetes is diagnosed, your child should be referred to the regional specialist in childhood diabetes.

Why ask a question like that on a site like this? If anything, you may find people giving you heart-rending answers as their idea of a joke.
Unless you don't have a choice, never take a child to a non-pediatrician. Children are almost like different creatures, and require the specialized knowledge of a pediatrician.
Don't try to guess at what is wrong - it won't ease your mind. Just find doctors you feel comfortable with and can trust. When you get a diagnosis, if, G-d forbid, it is serious, make sure you get a second opinion from a pediatric specialist.

She may have diabetes. But it could be a wide range of things with the symptoms you have mentioned. It partly sounds like she maybe having seizures. Or may still be fighting a viral infection. And in diabetes there are some who have to urinary symptoms with it. Try a calming bath. Or rubbing her head and back. Anything that might comfort her. I wish you the best and hope your baby gets well soon. God Bless

Go to the doctor, and get a thorough exam of your baby. I mean thorough, everything. And if your doctor truly thought it was diabetes, he would have checked right then. To me, that is getting you worried over something that may or may not happen, and that he is not willing to test for at the present time. My second child cried almost non-stop and I hate to say it but it may be her/his way of going to sleep. But check with a pediatrician.

night terrors could be the reason she screams at night and if she isn't drinking she wont be weeing ,with diabetes they drink non stop and wee nonstop, loose weight rapidly and get an acetone smell to the breath, she may have been spoiled whilst she was ill and now found she has a temper, she doesn't have bad colic pains or constipation as this makes young children scream uncontrollably

She could still be suffering from the effects of the virus. It matters more that she fluids than food at this moment. But when my children have been ill, I haven't even waited until the next day to get them looked at. I agree that if, you live near an ER you should go if you can. Even if it turns out to be nothing, surely it's better to get peace of mind. Good luck!
