The Mayan culture had a very precise calender. I believe it had like 14 or 17 months. Every 52 years (365 days) it would go through a cycle. It is said that at the end of one of these cycles that their god, Kuklucan (or Quetzalcoatl), would return again. He was a white bearded god with blue eyes. He is also known as the descending god because he is said to have come down from the sky. Anyway, the year 2012 is the last year of the Mayan calender. They believe it to be the end of the world basically.

The pre-hispanic Maya had an amazing array of calendars which they used to plot of cycles of time, including eclipses, planetary returns and more. The calendar most people are talking about when 2012 comes up is the "Long Count" which is basically a fancy way of just counting the days since 3113 BCE. On 12-21-2012, the calendar rolls over from 12 Baktuns to 13 Baktuns (like our calendar going from 1999 to 2000, except that a Baktun is 396 years long). Some people wrongly think that is the end of count, but that "slot" can go up to 20, which means there's several thousand more years to go.
On 12-21-2012, there is also a grand astronomical alignment at dawn between the Milky Way and the Sun. This alignment only happens every 26,000 years and to the Maya signified the beginning of a new world age (not the end of the old one--that's already happened).

The Mayans were an ancient civilisation in pre-columbia America. They had a very disfunctional society and could not survive, but they made a very good calendar. It was not an accurate calendar, but very complex.

Some interpretations of that calendar say it ends in 2012. Some experts differ on that theory.

A bunch of "Chicken Littles" are now sending out emails and setting up websites saying the world must end in 2012.

Kinda like the crazys who said the earth was going to end in 2000. And in 1900....and in 1998....etc....etc.....etc.....

It's all BS!

If you're talking about the Mayas and its calendar, its begin in August 13th of 3114 B.C., and it ends on December 23th of 2012, some people think that this mean the end of the world, because this is a very precise calendar and it even predicted eclipses, but you dont have to worry about, cause, when it reach the 2012, it will start again.

You should be able to find something under Mayan Calendars. They had a system that supposedly figured out that the earth or life (as we know it) would end.
I have read recently that it is going to change but not end here on earth. It will be a time of peace and right now we are in a time of fear.
