Jack Daniel's is filtered through maple charcoal -- the only difference.
Because of the fact that almost all Bourbon is made in Kentucky many people believe this is a requirement, but in fact Bourbon may be produced in any state. The only prerequisites are that it must be made in the US, contain at least 51 percent corn and that it must be stored for at least two years in new, charred oak barrels. Lastly, the raw spirit may not be distilled to more than 80 percent alcohol by volume.
Jack Daniels used to be 86 proof so that was another difference, but they have changed it to 80 Proof.
Furthermore, if you look into you will find Bourbons made in Louisville (not in Bourbon County) Franklin County, St. Louis, Indiana and even Nantucket. The "must be made in Bourbon County" statements are false.

Bourbon has to be made of at least 52% corn grain, in new oak barrels, turned every three days. I'm not sure how long it has to stay in the barrels but it also has to be made in Kentucky. That is the major key. You can do all of the other things but if it is not made in Kentucky, you can't call it bourbon.

there are alot of half way right answers. bourbon must be made in kentucky, distilled with 51% corn (it can be more) and aged in new charred oak barrels, aged at least 3 years and if aged less than 5 must be written on label, filtration is optional. tennessees laws are the lincoln county process which among other things state it must be filtered through sugar maple charcoal. all whisk(e)ys have laws and you can google search any of them.
