Angels are spirits, or without material bodies - why are they illustrated as having wings? Is this just religious tradition?

In the book of Isaiah, there are angels described with six wings actually; two covering their face, two their feet, and with two they fly. (Is. 6:2)

This may be one source.

artists and media depict angels with wings to explain why celestial messengers seem to hover over people. it is also depicted this way to show the separation of earth bound entities (us) and heavenly archtypes (them). some theorists believe that angels don't have wings but are seen in a bright white light, causing the viewer to interpret the light as a pair of wings. there is much said on an angel "severing his wings" in order to become human and possess free will. this is a symbolic way of saying to become earth bound.

Wings, or the power of flight, are a metaphor for the ability to travel between worlds. Therefore, a person or being with wings could travel between the Spirit World (Heaven), and the real world (Earth).

Angels with wings illustrate that they are immune to the force of gravity and can move about, beyond our Earth laws of physics.

Wings traditionally represent the next evolution of man. Unfortunately being on an angel means we must die first.
The first representing life, the second represents death.
Christians simply grabbed the previous symbols and adapted them for their own purpose. The evolution of an idea. Christmas trees, Easter bunnies, etc.

i have spoke about this often , what i do feel may happen though is , if anyone has indeed seen an angel in spirit form ( although i still doubt this ) then their aura would be so beautiful and bright that it may be mistaken for wings ..
this is the only thing i can come up with for the misconception

They are illustrated that way to simply show us they are angels. How else could you draw them and make them different from humans ,you can't draw a spirit.

I think it is a symbol of the fact that they can move quickly and go all over the earth. The truth is they probably move on wings of thought.
