Simple. Just hang out more. For example, if he plays football, play with him, go to his games. Show up at his house one day and cook him his favorite meal, then watch his favorite movies. Reach out to him. =)

Talk on the telephone, chat on-line. Find out his favorite sports team, what are his favorite types of movies, music, does he like to read? Meet him at Books-A-Million for a coffee/hot chocolate and then browse the area that interests both of you. Does he like outdoor activities, fishing, skating...These could be 'get-to-know-you activities that you both would pay your own way and just spend some time talking. Park benches or picnic tables are great out in the open places that are great conversation places!
