my roommate told me once. She said that when they are kittens they knead their mother to get milk. It starts to become a symbol of saftey and contentment (being by their mother) to them that they never really grow out of.

My cat kneads my neck... declawed, thank God! But it still hurts when he pinches my skin in his kitty toes. Oddly enough, though, he didn't start doing it until he was two years old... he picked up this habit from my grandmother's cat while we were living with her for a while.

Not sure exactly why my cat never kneaded for the first two years that I had him, as I don't know exactly what his life was like before I picked him up at the PetsMart adoption center. The idea of it, though, is that kittens knead their mother's teat to help with the flow of milk. Many of these baby habits continue through the adult life as signs of contentment, some only exhibiting during sleep - have you ever seen your cat act like he's feeding from a nipple when he's asleep?

I suppose that in the case of my cat these habits are sometimes dropped when they no longer become necessary, but can return with outside influence...

When they knead, it means they are feeling happy and comfy. It sure is funny to read the term "making biscuits". That's the first time I hear that. Thank you. Your term is so cute.

Because as a kitten they would knead on moms tummy to assist in getting the milk to flow when they nursed, so it reminds them of a secure comforting time in their lives.

Yep, as the others have said, it's a security, comforting thing they do. My cat does it on my daughter's "blankie" only. How am I supposed to get rid of that when I have 2 attached to it now? LOL I had a cat once that always did it on my bathroom rug...he even put his nose into in and make sucking noises! It was so cute!

It goes back to when they were kittens. Kittens do that while nursing to stimulate milk flow in their mother.
