The most talked about are the types of air pollution, which fall into one several categories according to their chemical makeup.
The most common are:
NOx - Car exhaust (smog), SOx - Diesel/coal exhaust (acid rain), CO - result of inefficient combustion (poisonous, heavier than air), and particulates like soot or dust.

Water pollution usually involves dumping chemicals or waste into natural bodies of water, but also widely occur as runoff from rain picks up whatever's on the ground (herbicide, oil, phosphates, etc.) as it flows into rivers and lakes.

Soil pollution is usually chemical waste (mercury, lead, etc.)dumped directly or leached from things like computer parts or batteries.

As you might imagine some types of pollution are more damaging than others.
