Vocalize before singing (because it will prepare your voice. If you shock it by singing without a warm-up, you might scratch your vocal cords), and drink warm-not HOT water pre and post singing. You can also sing from your throat and carry your pitch with your diaphragm (this can prevent you from losing your voice or from making your voice scratchy after a high pitch). Ginger is also good for your throat.
But the best advice if you wanna succeed at something is practice, practice, PRACTICE!

I have to agree with join a choir. They will teach you right breathing and singing techniques that will help you improve your singing greatly. You can apply what they teach you to any style of singing that you prefer.
You also can get a voice coach if you want to pay for one...
Or you can just do simple little things that may help you improve like when you are singing have good posture and take deep breaths through your mouth and let your belly go out instead of you raising your chest. Also when you sing don't spread your mouth wide but instead try to make a hallow space within your mouth...
It's hard to explain but something you can try is take a marshmallow and put it in your mouth holding it with your toungue and the roof of your mouth, then Do and that is how your mouth is supposed to be on the inside.

If you work on breathing from your diaphragm and really supporting your notes from deep below your sound should be much more fuller. Also opening your mouth vertically instead of horizontally to sing frees up the air flow.
I definitely recommend at least one lesson with a private teacher. You'll learn so much. Often times teachers offer a free class or half price class as a trial.

it helped me when iwas in chorus... becuase no one can hear your individual voice yet, so it gives you time to get comfortable with your voice... also if you breathe from your diaphram, and stand up straight it helps your tone... it would be best to figure out if you are an alto or soprano (low or high) and stick with that level ..... and then after all of this its best just to practice a lot... hope this helps ^.^
