I'm thinking of buying a used Kia Sportage 2001, and want to make sure it can pull a horse trailer.

It depends on the weight of the trailer. So find out what the trailer ways in total (empty weight plus cargo weight, including the horses), and then look at your owner's manual to see what the maximum towing capacity is. You also want to check your manual for other requirements like brakes and lights. Don't exceed the towing limits specified in your owner's manual.

I'd be surprised if the Kia Sportage has enough towing capacity to pull a trailer with two large horse, but again it depends on the total trailer weight to be sure.

There are lots of vehicles that will pull a loaded trailer with two horses, not just a "full sized pickup" as suggested above.

The correct answer is...the Kia is not really built for towing anything on a regular basis; it's more of an entry-level mini-SUV for carrying Mom, Dad, and a couple kids. A 2-horse trailer with 2 horses in it would certainly exceed its towing capability.

Sure, it might pull it... for a while, barely... maybe...but regular towing of something that heavy will eventually lead to premature transmission and/or rear end problems. In short, you'll tear it up.

I'd look at something beefier...Jeep Cherokee or Grand Cherokee perhaps, or something similar in size and towing capacity. I have a Dodge Durango; something that size could handle it fairly well. But I wouldn't do it with the Kia; otherwise you'll be looking at a tranny repair bill.

Hope this helped.

No, you need to have a full sized SUV. I tow horses several times a week and you really need to have a large SUV to do it with. THe smallest SUV that I've seen towing horses is a Honda Passport. I use a Sequioa and it works excellent. Although you do need to go out and get an electronic braking module. U-Hual can install it. The electronic braking really helps, and it's worth the $100 or so that it costs. In the end you need a vehicle that can tow at least 5000 pounds, and it's best if you use a light weight Aluminum trailer. Sundowner trailers are the best you can buy, but they are a bit pricey. I use a Bison with a tack room and it more than fits my needs. Having a tack room in front makes trailering really convenient.

Kia Sportage Towing Capacity

NO WAY!!! The vehicle is only 130 HP. I would not tow anything more than 1000 pounds. You need a full size pickup to tow a 2 horse horse trailer (with horses)

Wont do it. The trailer would end up pulling the Kia. To low on hp and not enough weight. Would really kill the gas mileage and would end up pulling the kia.

the best thing to do is call a dealer and ask what the weight it can pull would be. you have to know a estimated weight of the trailer plus the weight of the horses.

yeah, sure it can.

just don't put the horses in it.

to do that, you need a full size truck.some said a cherokee, bah!!
you need a truck. cherokees are ok if all you have is a jetski. they maight have the engine, but you need suspension and wheelbase, too
