This is a very general question with not much information about what you're looking for. There is no "best" camera out there, and there are quite a lot of very good ones.

Since it sounds like you're interested in learning something about digicams, I suggest starting off with one of the many fine digital camera review sites. See links below and have fun.

Or, if you just want a simple answer- pick up a Canon PowerShot A410 for $99 at NewEgg. It's a fine little camera for a great price.

I have an older Sony CyberShot. I love it. It was about $300 for a 3X (but that was 3 years ago). It has a few features like sepia, black and white, takes video... The nice thing about it is that it's small and can fit in your pocket. It has an auto focus that takes great pictures, just point and shoot. My husband has a more expensive camera and my Sony takes comparable pictures to his and sometimes my pics turn out better than his.

Whatever camera you decide on, I have one suggestion. We have found that my husband's camera that turns on and off with the turn of the selector knob gets turned on when we put it in the case. My camera has a small button separate from the selector so that doesn't happen. (it's a pain when it turns on while in the case because the lens comes out and it wears down the battery.)

Good luck!
