I read this in a philosophy book years ago.
The answer is simple and best answered by looking to the ancient Greeks.
The ancient Greeks were referring to prostitution.
Love many - which they did (and charged for it)
Trust few - they didn't trust many ... usually they only trusted one male (this is how pimps became into existence)
Always paddle your own canoe - meaning don't let the man get you from behind because he may cause internal damage if he is too rough. (this is where the expression "take the tugboat to tunatown" first became famous)

Love Many=treat everyone as a brother/sister(be nice to everyone)
Trust Few=don't expect everyone to be as nice as you, keep your real friends close, remember everyone has their own agenda
