According to the PEW Hispanic research center the majority of illegals from Mexico were gainfully employed before they came to America.

Your friend is the exception. The reality is that most Mexicans can earn 5-10 times what they earn in Mexico here. And, they usually earn it tax free. Even if they have taxes taken out, it's still better than what they are earning down south. You need to spend some time there and find out how a poor third world country really operates. The sick part is that it is right next door to the most powerful country in the world. Us. And, we're mostly to blame for it's poverty by allowing it's workers to come into our country to work. If we didn't have that cheap labor source right next door, our own economy would fall right down the toilet. As much as the media complains about immigration, we have no real interest in fixing the problem. The question you should be asking is why don't we help Mexico build their economy so their people don't have to come here to find work? We're completely capable of doing it. We did it for Germany and for Japan. Why don't we help our neighbors to the south? Because we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot. We'd have to find cheap labor elsewhere, that's why. We just get annoyed when they stay and try to raise their families here.
A good career is Mexico is being a waiter at a restaurant. He can make about $8-10,000.00 a year at a popular resort like Cabo San Lucas because they don't pay hourly wages, only tips. That is why you see so many of them hanging around. Here, the same guy can make a living, starting out as a dishwasher for about $12,000.00 a year. He lives with 12 or so of his friends. In 6 months, if he's lucky, he'll be promoted to a busboy and make about $20,000.00 a year. In a year or 2, if his English is good enough, he'll become a waiter and make about $50-60,000.00 a year in a popular Mexican restaurant in San Diego. If he goes into construction or landscaping in California, he'll make any where between $10-12.00 an hour to start as a laboror. If he picks produce, about the same. About 60% of that gets sent back home to support his family which buys much, much more than it would in the states. Rent for his family in Mexico is any where between $60 - 150.00 per month, unless he's bought a place, then there is no rent, just yearly taxes of about $300.00. The government in Mexico subsidizes tortillas, beans and milk, so his family can live on that for practically nothing. That is why they come up here work.

My sister is a teacher here in Phx, she moved to Mexicali about 2 months ago, she tried to get a job teaching there, and they only pay $300 DOLLARS per month!!!! When here she made about $4000. I have another sister who lives in Juarez, and she is an assistant at an attorney's office, she makes $ 50 dlls a week, if you have a family, there's no way you can survive in Mexico. There are jobs over there, but you can't live on the salary they pay. Oh! and by the way, the house she is renting in Mexicali is for $ 350 a month, not $ 50 like you say. (and it's a small 2 bedroom house, kind of like a townhouse) So she couldn't even afford to pay her house if she worked over there.

It is jobs they don't want to do for the price. They want the money here.
Anyone can make a living-some places in Africa-they only had a few chickens or goats for their livelihood. Maybe they sew or whatever. It is a matter of contentment. Some people would never break the law no matter what their position. It is a matter of values with them.
The people coming want more. They don't care about the law-they don't have high values or morals in that sense. Since not one record from hospitals shows a case of starvation from Mexico-we know it is for money. Is it wrong to want more-no. But it is wrong to break the law because you want more.

Well, what does he do exactly?
I have some friends, college educated, who were earning $3 an hour as a school teacher and engineer. They obviously couldn't make a living doing that over there. They came here illegally and one works as a janitor and the other as caterer.
Both make better money here than they would over there, even with a college education....

It doesn't make diddly d@mn what the wages are in Mexico or what it buys!! The issue is they came across our borders ILLEGALLY and they are CRIMINALS because of it!! Mexico's lack of a decent wage, Mexico's failure to provide for it's people, Mexico's lack of jobs is NOT the USA's PROBLEM!!! WE are NOT the WORLDS WELFARE OFFICE!! Those "FREE" services are NOT FREE!! WE the TAXPAYERS, who have been paying taxes since we started our first jobs at the age of 15 or 16, have PAID for those services. THOSE services are for USA CITIZENS when and IF they need them!! NOT ILLEGAL PEOPLE who SLITHER across our borders!!

Of course there are jobs in Mexico ... and of course the salary is lower in absolute terms than it would be here ... but considering the buying power, the average salary there isn't much worse than the average salary here ... what people want is MORE money ... so what motivates people is greed, pure and simple ...
