Okay, folks, I think that I had better explain where I got this question/riddle from!
There is a fabuluous show running in London's West End Theatreland called "Frank, Sammy and Dean, The Rat Pack: Live From Las Vegas". Essentially, the piece is a well put together recreation of the legendary trio's show at The Sands Hotel when they were making the film 'Ocean's Eleven'. Now, in the show, Dean Martin asks Frank Sinatra and the audience, the question that I posed. However...the joke is in the delivery! I shall try my best here to pose the question again, with a hint in the question as where the answer lies: "If the butcher, the baker and the candlestick make 'er, then why can't I?"
Still don't get it? The joke is in the innuendo of 'make her' and it sounding like 'maker'.

You can't hit people with things because they have:
Butcher - Butcher's Knife
Baker - Stale Bread
Candlestick Maker - Candle
And what do you have? NOTHING! Unless of course you are a lifeguard, then you could smack people with your whistle
