They are trying to show off but most women just find it amusing or irritating.

Not many guys do this - only the "meatheads" that lift 350+ pounds... of course they're gonna grunt, that's damn heavy! It's kind of a mental thing, when you grunt like that it almost mentally helps you lift the weight.
I do it very rarely, and only when I'm going for a max (the most weight I can lift, for only one rep). But I agree, some people do it too excessively like they're trying to get attention, or, maybe they're just naturally loud guys with too much testosterone, and PROBABLY have a lot of steroids running through them.
As far as dropping the weights, there's no easy way around that when EACH dumbbell you're lifting is 120 lb or more. Gravity is a ****** when you're bench pressing those, and on the last rep, you're so out of energy to the point where you almost have to drop them. I know, I've lifted those before, and they DRAIN your energy.

I figure "whatever floats your boat". It can't be any worse than trying to do a serious work out and all you can hear is a group of ladies sounding like a bunch of hens chatting it up on the treadmills...I'm sorry ladies, but find another place to socialize...the gym is for "working out", not working out your problems with your love life, kids etc.
Save it for when you can get together for a latte.
If grunting can get you through that last rep, then buddy, grunt away.

I think, "Wow either the weight are more than 20 pounds or they are a baby." I hate it when I see big, muscular guys acting like that with 10 pound weights. Have you noticed the placebo effect at the gym atmoshere? How you see aguy picking up big, heavy stuff with ease anywhere else, but at the gym, it is heavy?

I think it is really funny. It is not really necessary to grunt and yell when you lift waits, so if they are just grunting to show off i think they are really stupid and that is why it is so funny.
Rail I just looked at you website that is sick. I almost puked. How can someone do that to themselves?

The only reason they do it is to draw attention to themselves.
My wife and I go to the gym together. She still hasn't told me what she said to this guy but she said something to a guy who was doing exactly that and he left. He doesn't go to the gym at the same time anymore so we never see him.

EEEEWWWW! The mere thought of these guys makes me ill, and it conjers up memories of the stinkyness of the weight room. Those bulgey neck veins with the drippy sweat were really attractive to. NOT.
