kittens are 6 weeks old. molly (poodle) always takes the same kitten. mother cat doesn't mind. molly growls and nips at me when i try to take kitten away. kitten seems to like it also and plays with molly's ears. i have had experience with both dog and kitten litters but never saw this before. we were shocked the first time but she was persistent so we watched her to make sure she wasn't going to harm kitten. she is a young dog herself and never had a litter. she is just one year old. has anyone ever seen this before? or any ideas as to why she is acting this way.

I have heard of it too. But I have never actually seen it. I know a lot of animals treat a toy like that......

That was so touching, I almost cried..I think "great dane lady" is right. You should keep that kitten. Think of how upset Molly will become if you don't let her keep her baby? I am serious.
I would have her spayed and keep her baby.

I found 2 kittens in a pile of brush was going to burn. I had a cat with kittens and a male dog. the dog loved the kittens and took care of them. But he didn't know what to do when they wanted to nursed. But finally the mother cat I had let them nurse her. Animals do odd things sometimes.

It's instinct. In all my years of rescuing animals I have seen a lot of strange things. I had a female dog take over the mothering of a baby raccoon. If she isn't hurting the kitten I wouldn't bother her, and let her think she is the mother of the kitten. Good luck.

Some dogs do this with their toys....they have false pregnancies and then become overprotective with toys. If the mother cat doesn't mind, and the kitten is healthy and not missing meals by being taken away from the mother, then leave it be! How cute that must be!!

The best answer I have now is that maybe "molly" since she's never had a "litter" of her own she wants to experience what it is like you should let her roam around to find a male or something hope it kinda helped!

She might think they are hers... I've seen this before several times. Let her play along, but make sure she doesn't get too protective of the kittens.

It's cute, isn't it? It's okay, I believe, Molly probally wants to help the mother cat.

THAT is ADORABLE!... take lots of pictures! In the wild female "pack mates" help with the puppies.... I don't see any reason why this wouldn't be tranferable to the doggy world!
