My boyfriend and I are interested in going to Hawaii. Does anyone have any information to help us plan better? Anything relating to costs/expenses or places that are a must-see would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Hawaii is more expensive than other areas of the US, but it's not that expensive. To cut costs, keep snacks in your hotel room and eat at cheap places for breakfast or lunch. For dinner go out to a restaurant. Most places will have a menu just outside the front door so you can see what they have to eat and check prices. Dinner for two is about $40-60 depending on the restaurant and whether or not you drink alcohol.

As far as places to go, that would depend on what island you visit. Go to a bookstore or library and check out some travel guides. Also, I've found that carrying a map is helpful for figuring out where I am and how to get back to my hotel. I bought one for Oahu that was plastic coated so I could mark on it with a dry erase or grease pen. I was able to plan out my route and didn't get lost.

AmunRa how in the world did you get that close to an open lava flow??? Your not allowed to get very close at all!!! But yes you should definitely see Mauna Kea, Haleakala also has a plant called the silversword and is the only place in the world it grows I've always wanted to see it since I was a kid and finally got to on my honeymoon cruise (despite the fact that I lived on Oahu my whole life!!!) Hawaii in general is very expensive I don't have exact numbers but it is. You just got to go to Waikiki to say you've been there be aware their are about a million Japanese tourist and most of Waikiki caters to them. So if your haole (white) and don't get an aura of welcomeness at some of the Ala Moana and Waikiki shops it's cause your not Japanese and willing to spend $500 on a small purse. Pearl Harbor for the history take the guided tour of the USS Missouri, I over heard it once when I was helping set lights during the day for a dinner party that night and the tour guides were great. Also Iolani Palace is another great historical tour. I hear the rain forest on Kauai are gorgeous. And hiking is always a good idea, but there are many to choose from, many books as well. Hope this helps!

I just got back. It was 100% worth it. I would reccomend the island of Kaui. There is so much cool stuff to see. The beautiful beaches and the wonderful rainforests. The price is high because all of the stuff has to be shipped in so bring as much stuff as possible. And you have to try Moana Loa Chocolates. REALLY GOOD! I would recomend staying at the Waihohai Beach Club Marriot. I went there and every day they have a list of set activities for adults and children wheather its a movie for the kids or a massage for the addults. The best thing was the tropical walk. Hope I helped.

P.S. A MUST see is the northern Na Pali Coast of Kaui. You can take a boat or a helicopter and it is just beautiful. The tours are expensive. Per person for almost every tour on the island starts at like $75 so you need to save a lot of money.

Maui was the best by far. Whale watching, snorkeling out on the reef. Mountain biking down Haleakala National Park. Fine dining and clubs in Lahaina (go to Cheeseburgers in paradise and order the Lahaina Luna Swirl in raspberry for me)
I liked the Big Island as well, very laid back, still plenty of 'touristy' things to do but at a much more relaxed and sometimes cheaper pace. Of course it had the volcano and if you've never seen a volcano.....WOW. I have pictures of me roasting hotdogs over an open lava flow.
Personally I felt Oahu was way too touristy. T-shirt vendors everywhere and just generally unclean looking. PLenty of clubs to go to if that is what you are looking for. Some of them pretty good.
They have airfares that let you island hop so that you can spend a few days on Maui, Kauai, The Big Island or Oahu.

everything is expensive, in Hawaii. But I recommend going to the Hula Daning at Kodak Hula Park, on Oahu. If you know someone in Hawaii, let them suggest restauarants. If might be better if you'd stay with them, too. The beaches are good, but be aware that there could be flirty teenagers, or even even teenagers verbally fighting- often a girl and a boy. But keep an eye out for hermit crabs, if you go the beaches. It cheaper to fly over and rent a car, than anyother method of getting there.

Having gone to Hawaii several times I would say Waikiki is best for a family with young children. How young? There is a big Water park that has rides fo the older kids, nice pools with slides for the younger kids. The zoo is quaint and younger children will love it. If you go on Saturday you will see local artists displaying their work outside the zoo. There is the Marine museum there that young and old alike enjoy. There are shows, hikes and walks. My kids loved the Dole Pineapple Maze and orchard. We enjoyed renting a jeep for the day and just driving out to the North Shore and stopping at various beaches to watch the HUGE surf. The Barfoot Fun cruise is nice. You go out on a boat with a floating trampolene for about 4 hours. There is plenty of good snorkeling and lunch. Dont let the crowds scare you.. Waikiki is plenty big for everyone. You can get good deals on hotels. Look online.

I would suggest going to Oahu. I have been there five times, and love it there!! There is a really inexpensive restaurant for breakfast. It is called the Seaside Bar & Grill, and is located on the corner of Seaside and Kuhio Ave in Waikiki area. They have really inexpensive breakfasts there.
You can always go swimming, there are no private beaches on Oahu.
There is always McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut.
Go to any ABC store and buy a thebus bus pass!! They are 20.00 pp, and you can go around the island for four consecutive days!!
