I'm going to try this question again in hopes to get an answer that is closer to what I'm looking for. Thanks to those who replied to previous question.

I am looking to hear from people who have actually leased a car themselves or know of an experience of friend or family. When you brought the car back, planning to walk away and not purchase the car, what extra costs (if any) did the leasing company hit you with? Did they nitpick small stuff? Did you walk away and owe nothing? How long did it take for them to inspect the car, etc??? Any siginificant negative or positive experience to share? Lastly, did you lease again???

Thanks!!

I have leased many cars. The return process is not difficult if you have kept up on the maintenance on the car. If it has major body damage, you will be charged for it. Likewise, if there are cracks in the windows, burns on the car seats etc. Also, you must be tread on all four tires that meet minimum specs. Check the contract for the lease. Some leases now require proof that you had regular maintenance done...oil changes etc. That does not mean you had to take the car to the dealer for the maintenance...but you hav eto have records. Also check your contract for end of lease clauses. some have a fee to return the car. And make sure you do not go over the contracted mileage...you will be charged for extra miles at whatever rate you contracted at.... Leases are good if you understand the financials behind them.. you want a money factor that is as close to zero as possible (money factor is different than interest) and you do not want to put money down at the start of the lease. Check edmunds.com for a list of current incentives by the automakers.

I got lucky, as they didn't give me crap about small dents and dings and even a broken door handle. They did, however NAIL me for $1000 for going over my mileage. And this was after they applied my security deposit (which of course, i did not get back) OUCH!

I would have leased again, but we decided to be a one-car family for environmental reasons and my husband owns his car outright, so the lease got turned in and did not get replaced.

in the past, anytime I replaced a lease with another lease, my security deposit was rolled over into the new lease and I was NEVER charged for damage or going over my miles.

the actual inspection does not take long. however, do not let them make you leave the car and tell you they will do the inspection later. make them do it right there and sign off on it. they check for big scratches, cracked windows and their favorite is the tread on the tires. they try to get everyone with this. i lease a chevy and on their website i can see exactly what they check. they also give you a template to cut out to measure scratches.
