Dear Mandy,
Congratulations on your first. Good idea to prep ahead of time. My thoughts - depending on the baby:
1) You may well want to have 5 - 8 burp / soft cloths. I've seen some (and my daughter had some days) where I would want to have that many with me.
2) You'll also want to find a diaper bag dispenser that dispenses little blue (at least, my "Diaper Duck" did) bags into which you can put the baby's soiled diapers so they don't foul up public areas when you put them in trash cans.
3) Make sure you have a ziplock bag that you change regularly to keep the pacifier in (or that the pacifier has a pacifier cover).
4) Make sure that you have 2-3 clean onesies in addition to the outfit.
5) If you'll be out in the sun, a good hat or two for the baby.
These items will change in variety and size as the baby grows, but I think this is a good start.

With your first child you always go crazy and pack EVERYTHING, and most of the time you don't use much of it at all. For now, the pacifier, you don't really need. Some babies like it, some hate it...so after your baby is born it will be something you will find out if you need. Diapers, wipes, changing pad, burp cloths, a clean outfit...honestly I think that's all you need. A blanket you can keep in the car, so you don't have to carry it around. Remember your baby will start getting heavy and carrying a heavy bag everywhere will become irritating. With my second child, I packed diapers, wipes, her formula and a bottle. That's all she ever needed. So it's what you find that works for you...

You will find that as the baby gets older your needs will change but starting out you need diapers and you should calculate that by every 3 hours you will need a new diaper, wipes, extra outfits not just one but several, burp clothes, blankets, changing pad, pacifier, lotion, baby powder, cream for diaper rash,hair-bows(if its a girl).Everything should depend on the amount of time that you will be away from home and how old the child is.

Might consider going ahead and getting some Mylicon Drops for gas. Baby tylenol, At least two changes of clothes if not more even simple outfits like onesies will be good as babies burp throw up whatever and are needed to be changed a bit. As they get older will need toys and teething devices. Also might consider extra burp cloths. Two pacifiers, and not all babies can take to breast so would still consider bottles, as well as nursing pads for yourself. Hope this helps

okay the mommy diaper bag should include
6 to 8 diapers
wipes
2clean outfits
2burp cloths
2receiving blankets( covers leakage)
1 changing pad usually come with diaper bag
2 pacifiers covers for losing one
baby toys
corn starch powder
and a washcloth to clean up big messes in a plastic baggy.
you will need a big diaper bag for a while when I breastfed I also kept and extra shirt for myself do to leakages and spitups.
and you don't sound like an idiot i wished that I would have known with my first child too it would have saved me alot of money from buying outfits and shirts when I was out.

i carry that and as a breast feeding mother i take with me a blanket big enough to cover with because a reciving blanket is too small. I do carry a bottle with me though. Just incase of and emergency and i'm not with baby.
Desitin, balmex, what ever diaper rash cream you plan on using. i use balmex.
i keep 1 extra onies in the diaper bag also on top of the clean out fit.
Tyenol
Motrin
Gas releif drops
These are kept in the diaper bag at all times.
good luck and congrats.

Diaper rash cream, just in case. It's good to put on the baby before you leave for an outing where you might not be able to change her as often as you like. Will keep moisture and irritation to a minimum. Good Luck! and congrads!

I also kept a clean shirt for myself in the diaper bag so in case I got spit up on I didn't have to go walking around with spit-up on my shirt.
Also
A water bottle for yourself. Breastfeeding makes you thirsty.
Healthy snacks for yourself.
I'd skip the pacifier until breastfeeding is established (around 6-8 weeks)

You've done good! The one thing that I ALWAYS had in addition to what you've listed was a hat, tushy cream (Desitin), a small bottle of destilled water (for the times that she dropped the pacifier or got something on her clothes), and some kind of toy. The toy changed according to the age.
Good luck on the baby!
