Yes. I have done it. It is usually achieved by loosing "impacted matter" in the digestive system or due to water gain/loss. Loosing 5 pounds in a week is OK if you are grossly over weight; but as you become closer to your recommended weight, it is generally not healthy.

By going on the induction phase of the Atkin's diet, you can lose about that much in a week. You eat pretty much only meat, eggs, cheese, and mayonaise. The idea is to eat less than 20 carbs a day. Durring this induction phase (first 2 weeks of the diet) you can't eat nuts, or any fruit. After the 2 weeks, you can eat some berries and a couple types of melon. You see, the body burns carbs for energy, but when you have no carbs to burn, you burn fat for energy. When you get to the point where fat is your energy source, the medical term for it is Keytosis. As a runner, you could probably lose a lot more than five pounds in your first week. Just make sure not to starve yourself. You may also experience a slight loss of energy at the beginning, but it will subside after a week or two. After induction, you can also begin to add five carbs a day each week. Once you stop losing weight, that's you're limit per day. Any amount of carbs over that will make you gain weight, and any amount of carbs under that will make you lose weight. I love this diet. It's working great for me, and I'm never hungry. Plus, you don't really have to excersise. But of course you always should. I'm just saying you can sit on your butt and eat, and still lose weight. Yes it is possible but it isnt the heathiest , I lost 20 pounds in less then 3 months by eating 600 calories per day. It isnt the healthiest thing but it does work.. People say u only lose water weight but man O man my problem areas are just about gone!!
