The same reason film cameras have a viewfinder. To compose and take a photo.
But with digital, most people use the Lcd screen....because it looks pretty and its easy to see.
The only time I would use the viewfinder is if my batteries were very low and I had a low battery warning. Its saved me a few times.
Obviously if you have a digital SLR camera, then you will always have to use the viewfinder (thats the nature of digital SLR)

It allows you to 'compose' the shot more easily than using the display screen on the back, as lens optics + human eye has MUCH greater resolution and color depth.

Plus most people are familiar with viewfinders from film cameras, so there's one less thing to relearn about taking pictures (established ergonomics).

The LCD screen uses the battery up pretty quick, turning the LCD off and using just the viewfinder can sometimes double the life of your battery.

it's for those old timers who still like to use the ol' trusty viewfinder!

In dark situations where the lcd doesn't show much or anything at all.

it's mostly necessary on night shots where you intend to use flashlight.
