Most professional photographers don't actually use the LCD screen on the back of digital camers. For a couple reasons
1) It doesn't provide accurate color readouts. By default, LCD screens are brighter than what the lense actually records. This is done to help compensate for the small image it shows.
2) It saves battery power. If you photograph an entire portrait session with the LCD you will go through a lot of batteries. And batteries equal money
3) The LCD isn't instataneous (even using postview). The camera has to record the image to the memory card before the image is displayed. This can take up quite a bit of time and make any session take longer than it should.
4) On pro-grade digital cameras, the LCD isn't live. It only shows the image after the photograph has been taken.

I would not even consider buying a digital camera without a viewfinder. The LCD display is often difficult to see in bright sunlight. The viewfinder also helps me to "frame" my subject better and to meter (depth) more effectively.

lol - I know what you mean. but actually my parents use the viewfinder because the digital screen is too "modern" for them. they like having the convenience of the digital camera, but they also like having something old-fashioned on it, because it makes them feel comfortable (and not "too old")!

Ever try shooting pictures involving the sun or a really bright object using only the LCD? Also....your pictures are a little more steady when you use the optical one because your face is helping support the camera.

they probably just put it there for people who have used cameras with viewfinders in the past, who still prefer to shoot that way.

To help frame your shot when, in bright sunny conditions the LCD screen is hard if not impossible to see.

If you don't use the screen it helps make the batteries last longer. I also use it to help steady the camera

If you want to save battery, you can turn off the LCD. Also if your LCD ever goes out, you can still use it.
