Does anyone know the prayer that you are suppose to say after confession.

This is the one I was taught to say growing up Catholic:

O my God, I am heartfully sorry for having offended thee, and I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishment, but most of all because I have offended Thee my God, Who is all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more, and to avoid the near occasion of sin, Amen.

If anyone is curious about the actual full procedure then:

Procedure for Confession

The person confessing (penitent) goes into the confessional. Usually a person has a choice to go face-to-face or behind a screen.

The priest says, "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

The penitent responds: "Amen." The penitent continues, "Bless me Father, for I have sinned. It has been (how long) since my last confession."

The penitent then continues, confessing his sins and giving some general idea of the number of times he has fallen into them (e.g., "one time," "a couple of times," "a few times" "many times." Generally it is not necessary to be more precise than this. (The priest does not need graphic details!)

The penitent concludes the confession of his sins by saying, "For these and all of my sins, I am sorry."

The priest may offer advice at this point, or ask the penitent to offer a prayer or other sacrifice for a penance.

The penitent then offers an Act of Contrition.

The priest then gives the penitent absolution, and his sins are forgiven. The priest may conclude the sacrament by saying, "Go in peace," or similar words.

Do you mean the Act of Contriftion? This prayer is said during the Sacrament but, after you have confessed your sins. The other answerers have provided many fine examples of Acts of Contrition.

If your parish has Confessional Boothsm, chances are, they will have the Act of Contrition right there in the booth for you.

If, by "after confession" you mean your Penance, that is up to the priest. He will tell you what prayer(s) to say after you leave the Confessional.

im not sure but i think the act of contrition is said during confession then you have a pennance that you are given by the priest to prove you are sorry for your sins this can be any prayer or anything else within reason

The act of Contrition seems to have different versions...I learned this in 3rd grade :Oh my God, I am sorry for my sins. In choosing to sin and failing to do good, I have sinned against You and Your Church. I firmly intend with the help of Your Son to make up for my sins and to love as a I should.

I've also heard of the one above mine, its the more traditional version, I have just happened to stick with the one I've used for almost ten years not really as a choice between the two.

I think basically what it needs is I'm sorry God. I have sinned and my sins have done this, because I am sorry I'm going to try with all of my ability not to sin and I ask for Christs help in doing this and loving as You desire me to.

Maybe a priest or someone with study in theology could explain this further, but it seems that they all say the same thing in different words, and it is what they say, not how they are saying them, that seems to be important.

I am a non denominational Christian. I won't knock what ever prayer you are supposed to say though.

I would ask God to forgive me of whatever sin I had committed and then realize that because of Jesus' death, in my place on the cross and my acceptance of Jesus. I am forgiven.

O My God, I am heartily sorry for having Offended Thee, & I detest all my sins because of Thy Just Punisments: The loss of Heaven & the pains of Hell, but, most of all, because they Offend Thee my God Who Are So Good & Deserving all my love. I firmly resolve with the Help Of Thy Grace to sin no more & to avoid the most-near occasion of sin. Amen.

Ask the priest

That depends. Are you praying directly to God or are you praying "through" your priest? If you are praying directly to God, just tell Him what's on your heart. He loves you and He wants to know. If you are praying "through" your priest, then whatever probably goes because the Bible says we are to pray directly to God.
