When i used them 7 years ago, the diaper service brought them for me. You just lay it out, fold the sides into the center. Place it under the babys bottom. Fold the front up and bring the sides areound to the front, and pin. Then don't forget to put the plastic pants on.

For a rectangular diaper:
1. Place diaper lengthwise under baby's bottom
2. Fold the front corners about 2 inches towards the middle
3. Fold the front up toward the belly button
4. Fold the top end to the inside so that the new fold rests at the
waist
5. Bring the 2 corners from the back of the diaper to the front
and secure with diaper pins

I remember very well, with my son.
We always used cloth diapers on him, of course back then, disposables were just coming into the market place and were considerably more expensive than now.
Used to use the pre-folds, the ones with the thicker pad down the middle, like someone said earlier, minimal folding with just the two front corners toward the center then pull it up and pin the back to it.
For my self, since I'm incontinent, I still use cloth even today. Disposables are so uncomfortable, they are hot and sticky even when dry.
I made them myself and I made them like extra thick training pants so I don't need to use pins or anything with them. Being cloth, they breathe better than disposables so air can get to the skin and I don't get rashes. Something to think about when diapering a baby.
If we as adults knew what it felt like to be in disposables, we would never use them on our babies. Think about it.

Fold into a triangle........have the triangle pointing down towards the baby's feet. Place the baby on the triangle with it's butt right in the middle. Take the point facing down and pull up and over the baby's crotch. Take the other 2 points and pull them across the baby's waist making all 3 point meet under the baby's belly button. Thats where you safety pin all three points. It's always good to use an elastic banded pair of plastic or latex bottoms to prevent leaks.
Good Luck !!

If you get the triangle diapers, no folding needed. If you get the ones with the thick section in the middle, very little folding. Just fold the two sides in & fan it out when you go to use it.

I used what is called the kite fold (my youngest is 2 1/2) http://www.babybunz.com/cloth/diapering/2_kite.html
I liked flat diapers, they clean easily and when hung to dry they dry in no time and the sun bleaches them. My kids have never had a diaper rash and both were toilet trained early and quickly. Good luck!

I tried them 16 years ago with my son. We used a diaper service, but the smell was still awful! I had already been putting my son in disposables for going out, so the transition was a no-brainer!
Meanwhile, I've found other ways to help the environment, like recycling and composting. I like to think I've made up for all the diapers.....
