Make sure you are not drinking too much caffeine later in the day. I've heard that you should not drink coffee (or other beverages with caffeine) after noon!
Also, are you watching TV in bed? Consider reading (and something boring if you really want to nod off :P) or something else that is very relaxing. TV seems to keep people interested and awake longer.
And make sure your room isn't too hot. That always keeps my family up longer.

I've had the same problem at times. Experts recommend thinking pleasant thoughts....don't go over everything that needs to be done tomorrow....don't rehash the day that just ended...don't try to balance your checkbook in your head etc. Maybe engage in a little fantasy world or something of that nature. Also, don't take a nap after about 2 pm.....even if you have to force yourself to stay awake!
Don't know where I read all that, but it seems to work.

A nice little glass of Raspberry Reunite wine always seems to take the edge off my jangled nerves & do the trick for me!
While I do certainly do NOT condone nor recommend a dependency on any form of alcoholic beverages as a solution to ANYTHING, just a teensy bit CAN be beneficial on occasion!!!

Before you go to bed, try to write everything down on a piece of paper that you want to/have to do the next day.
When it takes me forever to fall asleep at night its because I'm always worrying about what has to been done tomorrow and if I will remember to do it. Once I kept a journal by my bed and starting writing things down I was able to go to sleep a lot faster

Breathe.
Seriously. Turn off the TV, and focus on your breathing. Take in DEEP breaths. One of the reasons people have a hard time sleeping is lack of oxygen to the brain. They have to relax a little while to be able to breathe deeply enough first.
So just focus on breathing deep, and keep your eyes closed and all distractions put away while you do it.

Reading works, and when I really can't get to sleep, I slowly count backwards in my head, starting from some big number like 9,000 or so. I rarely get past two hundred numbers before I've fallen off.

I always just close my eyes and think about what great will happen, such as 1 more day closer to my birthday, I am going to see my family, shopping, ect. Think of happy things tomorrow will bring.
