As for the best way to serve the Lord, I'd say that He makes His will known to you when you let Him into your life, and tell Him that you're turning your life over to His work.
Yeah I know. That sounds like obscure preaching. But there's not many people out there that can point to you and say "God wants you to do this." They DO say that... but whether they get it right, is another question entirely.

Just be a good person and live your life with a clean conscience, while helping others. The rest is just details.
By the way I'm actually agnostic so I think this theory covers pretty much all the religions.
