I ask because I work in a hotel and know that the chambermaids are the people who work the hardest . But do you realise that in lots of cases, they never get any tips left in rooms because after the porter gets the guests cases, receives their tip, then goes back into the room, to take the chambermaids tip as well. I know I can't generalise about porters, but it happens in our hotel all the time. Just thought I'd tell you, because I think it's out of order.

All the porters and maintenance carry master keys.

Yes you're quite right! I was wondering the same thing last time we went to France (February) so i asked at reception! I felt a little silly but asked anyway. Receptionist told me that it was up to clients to tip or not but never to leave any tips in the room as chambermaids might not find them? Because money found in bedrooms (No matter if it's a tip) Has to be handed at reception (In case clients forgot their coins). Our chambermaid was lovely as well! She gave us lots of tips as we were asking her best places to visit and what not. So we asked her when she was going to be off. Turned out she was to be off two days before we left so we waited for her in the morning before her days off and gave her a tip and a bunch of flowers because she'd been so nice! We'd expected her to be used to it but she burst into tears, told us that had never happened to her before. And yes you're right she worked jolly hard to keep our room clean, never mind giving us the time of the day when she was obviously busy had stacks of other things to do rather than chat to us but she did!

That's really sad that the porters/bell boys would do that. I usually leave a tip for the maid at the end of my stay, usually a percentage of my hotel stay (depending on the amenities, service and cost, it could be from 10-20%), plus extra if they did a really good job or left me pillow mints. LOL...anyway, the porters are being completely unethical, and I agree with your frustration.
Maybe you should suggest to your hotel management that if people want to leave tips for the maids (and most people really do, we realize that they work hard!), then they could put it in an envelope and leave it at the front desk or something. Perhaps a locked box it could be dropped in, then all the maids split the tips at the end of the day. Something more equitable so that the porters don't steal tips meant for the cleaning staff.

What scum! I always leave a buck or two each day with a note that says "for housekeeping." I do it each day rather than the end of the stay because I know sometimes there are different crews on duty. This also thwarts the porters' light fingers at the end of the stay. Most of the time they leave a little "thank you" on the note so I assume they are getting it. I notice extra attention to little things when I do that. Thank you for the heads-up on this. I will pay close attention when I travel that it is the chambermaids that are getting my money.

I tip, make the bed and empty the bin myself. Most of the time I tell the maid not to bother with my room. I have worked in housekeeping too and I know how hard it can be.
In my experience most, but not all, of the guests who left tips, (don't know where you are but I'm English and not everyone tips here) neglected housekeeping but would tip the waiting staff, porters and reception. It was probably because they didn't see us and didn't think about it. If I did get to talk to a guest though they would quite often leave me something.
I don't know if I would tip the maids now if I hadn't done the job myself.
It's terrible the porters are stealing your tips. You should tell the management if you haven't already. If you have and they've done nothing about it you should leave and get another job because they obviously don't care about their staff.

Yes, Most hotels leaves a card in the room with the name of the chambermaid. Tips can then be left in an envelope.

I always tip the chambermaids at hotels. It sounds like you have a different issue though. I would talk to the hotel management about the porter stealing your tips.

PaleCheekedAngel your response is unbelievable! Who do you think cleans your mess up when you leave?
This maid's work hard at what they do some have 10 to 15 rooms to do a day. Porter's shouldn't have keye's to the room's, but if they do then the tip's should be split at the end of the day.
And, no I'm not a maid it's just common sense, if you have any!

I leave tips for the chambermaids, at least I thought I did. It is out of order and I hope that this does not happen as a general rule.
I know how hard you work through relatives personal experience and good fortune to you.

Then where can we leave the tip so that the porter doesn't see it but the chambermaid will certainly see it? Such as, under a pillow or in the bathroom?

We always leave tips, sometimes we leave our loose change so the chambermaid gets a cup of coins. Some hotels leave a envelope which you can put notes in, even though it has their name on it you still can't be sure that she actually receives it.
