Because they don't realize that the choice is not in their best interests. It's an error in calcuation. People always do what they think is in their best interests, even if that is debasing themselves to make someone else happy. If they make a choice that hurts them, it's not because they hate themselves, it's because they simply made an error in judgment.
People who do make choices to hurt themselves because they like to be hurt often have psychological disorders.

well, it could mean they are stupid, or it could mean they have a sense of obligation to others, and society as a whole. sometimes you have to sacrifice things for a greater good, or for the good of your family. You include no context with your question.
