Yes we are, slowly but surely. All you have to do is look around you. Random traffic stops to look for DUI's, but it gets you used to being stopped for no reason. Security, red light and speed zone cams all over...public and private. We are being watched almost all the time now. NSA wiretapping, its to catch the bad guys....9/11 changed it all. Except the NSA wiretapping started in Feb. 2001! So who are they spying on and why? The SS, yes America has an SS, it's the Secret Service but they are now the Uniformed National Police force. They don't just protect the President anymore. They can arrest anybody, anytime, anyplace for any reason they deem. Free Speech Zones. If you want to protest when the President or Vice President is in town, you get put in a fenced off area no where near them. National ID Card, your papers please! RFID chips, the government wants them in your National ID card. That why they don't have to ask you for your papers, All they have to do is drive by with a scanner and find out who you are. Then there is The Total Awareness program, yes Congress stopped it, but most of the components have been put into place....one at a time. And of course the Patriot Act, sneak and peek searches gives the government power to do just about anything they want. You must remember when Hitler came into power, things didn't change overnight. Little changes were made and over time Germany inched closer to a dicatorship. I would sugest reading " We Thought We were Free" by Milton Meyer. It'll give you an insight to how things progress till it's to late to do anything. With vigilance we can prevent it from happening here.
" Those who sacrifce essential liberties for a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty or safety" Ben Franklin

Who is "we"?
The USA? No, absolutely not.
You are obviously not a history buff, because if you were you would know about Nazi Germany - SS, Soviet Russia and the KGB, and in more modern days North Korea.
Those are police states.
If you're referring to the Patriot Act and Homeland Security, I have an alternative for you, move to Haiti.
Maybe you forgot about Haiti and what's going on there, it's total anarchy the absence of any legitimate government. Google Haiti for news, you might actually love it there, a nation without a government. Great Idea!

Sure happened in New Orleans under liberal Mayor Ray Nagin, didn't it? Citizens who legally owned firearms for sport or self-defense had them seized by the police during Katrina last year. and they haven't been returned yet despite a federal court order to do so. Nagin and the police chief stand in contempt of court and now openly deny that it ever happened.

The US? No, not at all.
If you want to see a police state, your best chances are to look at the socialist and communist and Islamic countries who arrest people for speaking their minds, who shut down newspapers for criticizing the government, who jail people for supporting democracy, and who do not let people freely practice religion.
To compare the US to those places is juvenile nonsense.

no. I do find it interesting though that the same people that blame Bush for 911 somehow, also blame him for trying to monitor calls, follow money, lock up terrorist etc.
The next time that we get hit, they will be first in line saying that Bush should have done something.
Grow up folks. We live in a dangerous world.
