It doesn't work for everybody...but it works for me.
If you still have feelings for him and there may be a chance you two will get back together then don't jump into a relationship until you're positive how your ex feels.
If the relationship ended in a bad way and you're trying to get over the anger and the hurt, finding someone to make you feel special and that you have fun with can be a solution. (Know that this can mean another guy, pet or friend) Therapist may say otherwise; I'm just speaking from my experiences.

no its worse. If you date someone before you get over your ex it'll almost certainly be a rebound, and when you leave that person they will be upset and theres a good chance you'll turn that relationship into a 'hey ex look at me and my new man" kind of thing.

Wait until you're at least mostly over him
