When I was a vet tech we had a couple of families fly their cats to different countries. You should check with transportation, as one answer suggested, and then, as I think the other person said, check to see if anyone is coming your way. What city are the cats in. Some animal foundations in the city the cats are in may also be able to help. But again, if I remember correctly, the military families that we helped went through transportation. Make sure to check out the requirements in Italy as far as vaccinations, etc. There are different rules for every country. Some countries have done away with long quarantine. Good luck.

Hey! I'm a military wife, too, but we don't have pets. You should be able to talk to transportation and ask them what to do. You will have to pay for them to fly and everything will just depend on the airline. Do your research to find the best airline to go with~I've heard that the prices are outragous, but maybe you can find a deal. The people at your vet clinic on post will be able to tell you what you need to know about shots, papers, etc. I hope I've helped you! Enjoy Naples~my cousin moved there last week! We moved to Germany last month.

if you need to do something quickly, call an animal rescue in maine and ask about fostering, explain your situation and that your a military wife who loves her animals and needs to get them home. they will most likely have a fostering program, especially if you offer to donate some money for their care. then call the airline you will be using, if theres a layover, call both. every airline has a different poilicy, but most countries require two rabies shots within the last two years, the closest one to the flight cant be more than 3 mos. before you ship them, theyll also need a health certificate from the vet saying theyre healthy enough to fly, and some countries require a treatment for fleas and ticks two weeks before the flight. also, try talking to other people in the military, lots of our men are being shipped out to other countries, there might be someone willing to take one or two for you. im sorry hun, id take them for you and help you get them there, but i live in california, so thats not an option. good luck!

You should contact the airline you plan to use and ask their policy. You will need a sturdy carrier and the vaccination record of the cats. There may be quarentine issues on Italy's end and then again here in the US upon reentering.
You also should contact your vet for info. A good vet will be able to help.

I am a military wife who moved 2 cats to Sicily when we were stationed in Sigonella. Before moving the cats we had to go to the Italian Consulate in San Fran. to get visas for our cats. So unless the rules have changed, your relatives may need to do that for you.
Animals cannot be flown on military planes, so shipping them commercially is your only option. We flew over with our cats in soft carriers in the passenger area, but your poor babies will probably have to go in cargo since you won't be with them.
Check with the transportation dept on base -- they should know about the visas and how you get them.
Good luck Sweetie! Enjoy Italy -- we loved it there!

call your vet...you will need to get a health certificate from them to fly your pet. They would be able to find out all the details about quarantine and if they are required in Italy. AND call your airline to find out details on how to fly your pet with them.

Why can't you go over and get them and while your there turn it into a vacation. Your cats would also probably like seing you before they leave to get on the plane instead of a family member doing it. Plus I've heard its beautiful there so go and relax for a week with your kitties and bring them back with you. :-)

I think most passenger airlines will ship animals as long as they are properly caged. I would call an airline and ask them what their policy is on unattended animals. If you look around a bit, I'm sure you'll find one who will be willing to transport the animals for you, and you could pick them up when they arrive.

you contact the "cargo" department of the airline you wish to fly them on. Then, you buy a ticket for them. Then, the person that has them, takes them to the airport (as long as it is under 75 degrees outside), they will need to be in a pet taxi.
Then, they tell you when to go to the airport on your end, and you pick them up.
It's simple, really.

You could try to find someone from your home base in the US and travelling to Italy who would be willing to take resposibility for them. They could bring them along. Ask your husband to inquire with someone who could work this out. The military pays people to do this type of stuff.
