Go to http://www.linux.org/dist/download_info.html
There are several versions and links that will take you to download sites.
There, you can typically download the ISO's, burn them, and install them.
The most common version though, is the Red Hat version, Fedora ... which can be downloaded here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Distribution/Download
It will run BESIDE Windows on your system... but be careful when you install it... if you're not technically minded, you can corrupt or erase your WIndows Operating System.
If you can get your hands on VMWare Workstation, it will allow you to run Linux INSIDE windows, and play with it so that you become more familiar.
Good luck!

Linux is a separate operating system from Windows - if you install over an existing machine you will loose your old system unless you REALLY know what you are doing!
It is best to have a separate machine to learn Linux on. The easy setup you are used to with Windows is not there with Linux. You need to set up a root account that functions as the administrative account, be able to partition your drive, set drivers up, etc etc. You even have to learn which of the interfaces (GUI) that you prefer!
Go to the links the other people provided and READ. Download and burn the various distributions to CD (The best ones are setup as boot and install Cd's) and find a computer you can screw up as much as you want without cutting yourself off from a functional machine. Linux is not for novice users, but if you do learn to use it well it can lead to some pretty good jobs in the future.

here you can search for linux distributions, and you can get links to download the .iso files.
http://www.linux.org/dist/
After you finished downloading the .iso file you need a Image Burner so you can burn it to CD / DVD.
Linux is installed as another OS (operating system) on your computer. If you are using a different OS Linux will detect it and it will install an appropriate Boot Loader so you can Boot your PC with Linux or with your OS.
You can install Linux without having windows installed it's an Operating System fully independent, but you will need an Operating system and an Image Burner to burn the Linux .ISO files before starting to install Linux :D.
Anyway I recommend Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora Core, Mandrake.
Usually Linux comes with a lot of base applications but you can search for Linux applications here: www.google.com/Linux
If you need any advice in installing, working with linux you are free to contact me.

First go to the web site from where you want to download your favorite Linux. For example, if you are looking for SuSE Linux, go to http://opensuse.org . You will see links on their main page that will lead you to the page from where you can download the ISOs. Download all 5 ISOs and then burn them to CDs. Restart your computer and enter your bios settings page to make sure that your first boot device is CD-ROM. If its set to something else(like floppy) change it to CD and save and exit setup. After that insert your first CD. Soon you will see a message, "press any key to boot from CD", so press any key. Then you will see the welcome screen(welcome written in many different languages). You will see the options to install Linux, boot from hard drive and fix a linux installation. Select "install" from the list and then follow the instructions to install Linux. Make sure you follow them carefully, if you don't want to lose your Windows installation.
I suggest that you use SuSE Linux 10.1. You will like using it and you will have fun using it. Cause its very easy to use. And install KDE as your desktop. :)

You can install linux without Windows if you choose. Or you can dual boot between the both of them, whatever you feel like doing. If you want both though I'd suggest loading Windows first. The link to download Red Hat is http://www.redhat.com/ ... the download link is up top. &

Go to Novell.com to download the latest copy of Linux.
then you need a computer with CD(or better yet DVD) burner,
burn it on disk. and then istall from there. No you do not need to have windows installed to start installing Linux.

in case you're actually not likely to do twin boot, acquire and burn the Debian internet installer CD. it is going to set up the completed version of Debian on your stressful force at as quickly as from the Debian Repository. you do not might desire to tell it what to load. I truthfully have loaded Debian countless situations on computers this sort.
