The 3 wood is a fairway wood, meaining it's primary purpose is to be hit from the fairway. It is also often used as an alternative to the driver. Amateurs are actually better off using a 3 wood to tee off with rather than a driver, since hitting a driver is very difficult without the proper swing fundamentals.

The best thing to do is to experiment. Go to the driving range and practice with the 3 wood to see what it can do.

What a bunch of helpful people.

I use mine instead of the driver unless it's a downhill shot or a really long, straight fairway. Why? Because I hit it higher and more consistently. Don't know why, don't care, I play safe golf and hit what I know I can hit.

Tiger uses his frequently off the tee - said so in his book. Why? better control, less risk, and he doesn't need any more distance.

I also sometimes use it from a really clean fairway lie, if the shot is suitable - long straight fairway, no problem with a low ball trajectory. I won't use it in the rough, even if it's a good lie - too
easy to whiff under the ball or catch it fat.

Or, just leave it home. Me, since I got a 7 wood, I never pull my 3, 4 or 5 irons out of the bag, not even sure why I carry them anymore.

That's just me. Experiment. Have fun.

I use mine as an alternative to my 1. and sometime to get a higher arch on the ball. I used it when I don't have a pitching wedge
