I'm not much help with the gift you are needing right now but I have an awesome idea for a first year anniversary gift.

Get a page-a-day tear off calendar. Beginning with your wedding day and then every day for the first year (yes, seriously - every day) when you tear off a page write on it either:
A. Something you love about him
B. Something he did or said that day that made you feel loved by him
C. Something you appreciate about him

For your first anniversary take all of the calendar pages and give them to him in a nice keepsake box. I did this with my husband and it was a really great shared moment. I didn't do it our first year together though, it was Jan - Dec of our 3rd year of marriage. I kept the calendar at my office so he didn't know anything about it and was surprised. He still says after 10 years of marriage that it was the best gift he has ever received.

I think it was the best gift I have received myself. We had been going through a rough time the prior fall and were in marriage counseling. By forcing myself to find something positive about my husband every day for a year, it caused a shift in my thinking. I began looking for the good in him rather than only seeing the problems.

Get him something that he will like- Guys would most like rather have a grill then a fancy piece of jewelery or perfume.
And the grill is fabulous for cook outs, nice addition to a house and it gets you out of cooking :)
Even if it's a fishing pole (heck, then buy two and go with him) get him something that he would like, even if it's not what you would normally think of "special". Anything that a guy likes and will use will be "special" for him.
I got my FI a "leather-men" and it's his favor most "special" gift I got him... and lets face it most girls won't think a tool is special enough but he loves it!

Get him a luxury item that he would otherwise not splurge on for himself. For instance, my fiance loves to collect hockey cards, so I am planning on getting him a box of high-end cards for him to open.

Get him something luxurious... it's up to your man's tastes. A leather jacket, a really nice pool cue. I was even thinking about getting my fiance an authentic hockey jersey of his favorite team with his favorite player's stuff on it. I figure, we are going to have so many special things to remember our wedding by, we don't need to give each other the usual engraved with the date gift.

If you don't have much money (the authentic jersey is too much for me), you could still get a cheap gift he wouldn't buy for himself, like a silver contacts case with his monogram on it, a nice briefcase... even a really nice beer mug with his monogram on it that he can leave in the freezer to frost his beer.

Good luck!

What are his hobbies? Does he like sports? Buy him tickets for a game you both can go to, or he and a friend can go to. Write him a poem...or a letter expressing your love...whatever it is make sure that it is something that he will appreciate, it does not have to cost a lot of money either..

I bought mine a nice pair of Tiffany Cufflinks. This way he could wear them on the wedding day and will think of it anytime he wears a french cuffed shirt.

Get him something engraved, if he ever wears rings, maybe a ring engraved inside with both of your initals, or not, maybe some cufflinks, whatever he would wear everyday.
