When I was growing up I asked my mom and she would just brush me off. So I finally got some $$ together and starting shaving my legs when I was 14 or 15. I was sick of getting made fun of! It was a horrible experience because no one gave me any tips - I had many, many bad cuts.

I'm asking because I have a little girl. My mom totally brushed me off with a lot of the normal growing up things girl's need help with. Therefore I am a little clueless on timing with these things and how to help my daughter when the time comes.

I asked my mom at 12. She told me "NO!" and gave no explanation. I started sneaking to do it, so's I wouldn't be the only and hairiest girl at school.
I think when a girl asks (usually around 9-14), is when they start. Whether or not they're allowed, usually >.<
My mom wised up with my little sister. She told her she wasn't allowed to Shave because it would make her hair grow back thicker (not really true, but whatever). So she bought her Nair instead.
My sister uses Nair instead of shaving. Same age, though, 12. That's when she turned into a hairy beast and became self-conscious.

Nice mom. I think about 12 or 13 is a good time for shaving. How old are you now and why are you asking now? This must bother you. No young lady should have to go through that. At least you didn't want to go out and get a tattoo or worse.

I started at 11. But if a girl chooses that she'll shave (some girls don't mind the hairy look), then I think when she becomes conscious of it is best. If she's 13 and hasn't really thought of shaving her legs, then that's okay. If she's 10 and can't stand the idea of hairy legs, then she should be guided on shaving.

Yeah, my experience was the same as yours. I remember being 14 and embarrassed about it, mom never talked about it or anything. I started taking a razor here and there that were in the bathroom closet, then I just started buying my own when we went to the store. It was never talked about, I just started doing it finally.
And I have a daughter now too, and I hope things are different with me and her than they were with me and my mom. I don't want her to feel weird or embarrassed about that stuff like I always was...

You should shave whenever you need to. It has nothing to do with age. Girls as young as 9 or 10 could have heavy dark hair. I would suggest using Nair if you are young. You won't cut yourself and it works for a longer time than shaving.

I had dark hair and light skin so it was very apparent. When I was 11 my mom shaved my legs for me to show me how to do it, and from there I've been doing it ever since.
But I do know a girl that has such fine light hair that you can't even tell when she shaves her legs. In that case most girls will shave anyway just to be shaving.
