Some drills that might help:

1. set a certain amount of time (a minute for example) you have to run on a place like on an open field. then use something to mark where you ran. keep doing this so you can strive for a longer distance.

2. you can set a certain distance you have to run (from one end of a street to the other for example) and time yourself

3. do really short sprints (like 10-15 yards) and time yourself. strive for seconds. do these when you don't have very much time.

I would do all these with my friends so they can cheer you on and encourage you.

Okay missy. 1st you have to put ur heart in it, stay focused, and practice more. By doing that u sure will drop ur time.......but it will take some time though! U will have to practice at least 5-6 days a week so when u get on the track next time u'll suprise ureself by knowing how fast u've gotten by just practicing more and having the heart for it. I run XC too and and my mile time is better now than it used to be two years ago.......just because I practiced a lot and I put my heart in it. Good luck with ur time though!.......

try running sprints and hills

go to a quarter mile track, run one lap as hard as you can, then run one lap at a medium/slow pace. repeat for 20-30 minutes. This teaches your body to rest while you run, and improves your pace.

hills - find a road with a good hill on it about a quarter mile long, run up it then jog back down, and repeat for 20-30 minutes. this builds up leg strength and endurance.

you can also cross train with biking and swimming. I saw some of the best improvements in my 2 mile time after taking up biking.
