There are two kinds, disposible and reusable. The disposible ones are much more compact and thin. I have used these and absolutely loved them. I have a short vaginal canal and tampons dont work for me. They are nice because you can wear them longer than tampons and the risk for TSS is lower, plus you can have sex during your cycle. The down side is they are *a little* messy. I have never gotten a "handfull of blood" but I do get a little on my finger when removing the cup. Its not that big of a deal, I mean really, you should be washing your hands when your done anyhow!!!! The price to me seems worth it, its a little more expensive than a box of tampons, but not bad by any means. (I pay $6.99 for a box of 36, but I never finish a whole box in one cycle)
I have never tried the perminant ones, up until recently they were all made from rubber and Im allergic to latex. The design for these is a little different and they have a stem to help with insertion and removal. Im guessing it makes it easier when you remove it as opposed to the disposible ones. If its something you would continue to use the perminant ones are very affordable at under $35 a peice and it will last for approximately 10 years.
I think it's just personal preference is all, go to your local drugstore and buy a small package of the disposible ones called Instead Menstral Cups and see if you like them!! Good luck

I LOVE the Diva Cup. It's a latex-free non-disposable. I will never go back to pads or tampons. there's nothing wrong with seeing the blood and getting a little on your hands if you're comfortable with your body. I can't feel it at all during the day and I love only having to change it at night and in the morning.
More importantly, they are so much better for you. Tampons absorb not only the blood, but all of your natural moisture as well, which can disrupt the pH balance, cause irritation, infections, etc. Cups also carry no risk of TSS.
They are also clearly better for the environment. Just think of all the waste created by women using pads and tampons!
I think everyone should use a cup. Try it!

not messy at all if you know how to use it and are not scared of your vagina.
you have to know where your cervix is and place the cup over your cervix. if you're scared to touch yourself the cup is not for you. i've been using my divacup for 5 years and it has never leaked nor has it ever been messy.
i don't even see how it could possibly be messy. just take it out slowly and empty it carefully. you only need to do this every 12h so you really should need to do it in a public toilet or anything, just do it when you wake up and before going to bed.
it was honestly the best $40 i have ever spent. i have never worn pads or tampons ever since. it took me about 5 months to get it right, to be honest, because i didn't know where my cervix was (it was way on the side, btw), but i insisted and now i don't know what i'd be without it when backpacking.

I haven't used the Diva Cup or Keeper but I am considering buying one. I have used the Instead SoftCup, which is disposable. I like it for my heavier days. I thought it was more comfortable and less noticable than a tampon. You can wear it for up to 12 hours. I think it's a good way to figure out if you like menstrual cups before investing in a DivaCup or Keeper. (Although it is a different shape.)

well, I myself just learned about these devices and have read a TON about them, from what I understand, they can be messy at first, and they suggest using them with a panty liner the first few times. I got the Instead cups (they are disposable) for trying to get pregnant, so far they are very comfortable, can't even tell it's there, but I have to try them during my cycle to know if I have it in the right place....anyway, the Divacup sits lower in the vaginal canal, the instead cups cover up the cervix. Good luck!

Yes, there was a product that came out about 5 or 6 years ago called Instead. It is still on the market. I tried it and it was ok. I didn't experience the mess like some people are talking about. Just in case, I carried a couple pairs latex gloves with me. If your flow is light to medium, I would give them a try. Every woman's body is different, you may like them.

The website below will allow you to read reviews and view the cup. Its called Instead. From the reviews it seems to be a good option to switch to. The website says it also allows you to be intimate with your partner while wearing this. I dont know it seems a little weird but the website was a good site.

Extremely messy. I wouldn't recommend it. It's not a pretty sight. Pads and tampons I think would do a better job and you don't get so grossed out when you have to change them.

Yes, Ive used them before, but it was called something else... They're okay I guess but it can be kinda messy upon removal if you're not careful. I just stick with tampons, a lot easier to work with.

Yeah, it just seems a little too disgusting for me. It seems like if you had a cup inside your vagina catching all of your blood and you went to pull it out, it would get all over you and that just seems disgusting. At least with a tampon or pad, it's all contained.
