My first suggestion would be start as soon as possible, and also to be consistent. Stick with whatever you do.
What has worked for me is to let them run around without pants (yes, naked!) and follow them around closely for a few days. You will need carpet cleaner. Don't freak- there won't be as many accidents as you think. This helps to make him aware of what he's doing.
When he does go, don't get upset, just say, "this goes in the potty!" and "hurry!!" Then put him on the potty. Take him often. He will start to get the idea. When he does go on the potty, give him a SMALL reward ( I use mini M&M's ) Then you have to start asking " do you need to go potty? Tell mommy!" He has to understand how important it is to tell you.
He will get it! And don't waste your time and money on Pull-ups because there is little difference between them and diapers to kids. Yes, boys are a little harder, but you don't want to let him get older and more set in his ways before you start training him, believe me!! Good Luck!! Email me if you have any questions.
Also, sometimes they are more likely to go if you put them backward on the potty instead of on a potty chair, especially if they have seen you go.

I have 3 yr old boy who was potty trained 2 mo.after his second b-day. Watch for the signs, like an interest when you or the father use the restroom, taking off his diaper, etc. I suggest getting a small kid potty so he can go when you go. For the first week or two use his diaper and just take him when you go or every few hours. This will help him get the concept. (My son's doc suggested not to use pull-ups. I'm thankful for that because everyone I know who's kids were being trained at the same time are still learning.) Put him in some BIG boy under ware. Then take him every forty-five min. or so depending on him. Don't punish for the accidents He doesn't know better. Just explain oops tell me when you have to go potty. I hope this helped.

I think alot of boys are not really ready to potty train until a little older. I know you are tired of changing diapers!!
It sounds like you are on the right track. You might try letting him sit on the potty chair while you run his bath water. Sometimes the sound of running water will stimulate the urge to go. If he does, make a big deal out of it. I wouldn't push too hard though. He'll figure it out when he's ready.
And don't listen to the old ladies in your life who claim to have potty trained their kids by the time they were 1 year old. Their memories are going anyway. Ha Ha
Good luck.

Good Luck!!! I have 2 boys and I almost 302 myself trying to teach them! They are very hard to potty train. If you have noticed that he usually goes to the bathroom at a certain time, like right after breakfast, then around that time put him on the toilet or potty. You can keep him occupied by reading him a story. Most of the time it will relax them and they will go. If he does praise him for it. If he sees that you are happy about it he will try even harder.

it is harder to train boys, but not impossible. don't get caught in the idea that you MUST train him by a certain age. you don't have to. just make sure potty time is a good experience, and not a traumatic one. read to him, be patient, and clap if you get him to "go". if you don't get him to go, just say that's okay, and you really let yourself feel that too, because it is. never make a kid sit on a potty chair forever, because that is like a punishment. all of my children were trained quickly, because i made it fun and not an all day thing. just don't et him see at first when you flush the bm's, as they see it as an extension of them. that's the next step, just like mommie and daddy does.

i have 2 sons,1 daughter YES boys are harder. stand to pee sit to poop for starters! my kids are grown with kids of their own but i found that with the boys we made a game for going pee to get the idea of what happens....keep in mind we lived in the country...but to help teach them to control the sensation to pee we watered mommys flowers and trees outside.im not saying this was a good way but it sure helped me.once they learned the difference between the 2 it was pretty easy.

You can't decide when he's ready...he has to decide. That will eb when he shows some interest in the potty.
