I have seen it twice in London and it is one of my favourite musicals. However, it is not light-hearted (although there are some funny moments) and is quite tough going. If you are into dramatic stories rather than comedy, I'd go for it. It is long and the subject matter is about war and revolution so you need to decide what sort of mood you are in and whether it is what you want to do on a Saturday night. I would recommend going to see it but you do have to be in the right frame of mind for it.

I not only recommend it, but I'd even rent a tux if ya take me,,,smiles.
Certainly the live performances using Andrew Lloyd Weber, are the best I've ever seen, and it isn't a story meant to bring you down, any more than is "Leaving Las Vegas"
It is hard core social commentary however, and if you choose the DVD, try to use it in English, if that happens to be your language of choice.
As a fictional piece, it very well describes with some accuracies, the conditions of the time period, and has many emotions infused into the story line,,,some even very romantic.
I give it 5 stars, and will see it again myself, often.

I'm probably on my own here, but I HATE Les Miserables.
If you have to go to a musical (whcih as you've probably guessed wouldn't be my first choice) I'd go see the Phantom of the Opera.
It's much more fun - and at least you don't feel so bad laughing out loud when they're singing - as it's not all about famine, poverty and war.

I have seen it 10 times and would go tonight again if I was able to (I am at the moment in the tropics). Go for it !

I recommend you see it if you are really into musical theater. It really is a staple. At the same time, I saw it once, love the music, but will never pay to see it again.
