Everything will die at some point and the earth just like humans have a spirit animating it, the earth has animated the planet earth for over 4.5 billion years and is set to expire and move on to greater experiences Dec. 21, 2012, all life on this planet will be exterminated before that time by way of what is called a wild card event. No physical body can exist without a power source animating it. Most people who know of this date would like to believe that we will be transformed into something different and better, but that's wishful thinking, I choose to go with the end of the game scenario, which makes much more sense. Being a realist and knowing that we are eternal beings no big deal if you truly know this. Just like we use our bodies for the gaming experience so does the spirit that animates the earth and all other lower creatures on it. Check out the Ancient Mayans about their calender.

Some interesting answers.
According to Peter (2Peter 3:7-3:13), the world will burn up, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat.
I wouldn't count on the deduction that this won't happen for another 4 billion years, though. Too much difficulty predicting the behavior of stars. I've read where there are some major solar storms predicted for 2012...this would also line up with a great many religious who think 'the end is near'.
As a Christian, I am content to live each day as best I can, and trust God. He'll know when it is time to light the fires.....

The most probable cause for the Earth's destruction will take place when the Sun, as part of its solar lifespan, expands to a red giant. Current models predict that the Sun will expand out to about 99% of the distance to the Earth's present orbit (1 astronomical unit, or AU). However by that time the orbit of the Earth will expand to about 1.7 AUs due to mass loss by the Sun, and so the planet will escape envelopment. This event is estimated to take place in 5 billion years. (5 Gyr).

Before becoming a red giant, however, the luminosity of the Sun will continue to steadily increase. It will grow from the current luminosity by 10% in 1.1 Gyr and up to 40% in 3.5 Gyr.[20] Climate models show that a steady increase in radiation reaching the Earth are likely to have dire consequences, including possible loss of the oceans.

Every start in the universe die, and when our sun dies, the earth will be gone as well. We are too close (for universe standards), you know.

It's considered that the sun is not big enough to become a super nova, but it's estimated that in 4 or 5 billion years it will turn in a red giant sun, the heat will increase. Enough for the earth to say good bye.

Some believe that the sun's gravity will weaken enough to make the earth go into a different and wider orbit. But if that happens, it's not expected to be able to hold life, at least not as we know it.

It's more likely humankind wouldn't be already here by them though.

The Earth should last for at least five billion more years before the sun becomes a red giant and possibly will engulf the Earth.

Others say the atmosphere will burn dry out within 1.1 billion years after the sun becomes about 10% hotter, and that the oceans will evaporate within 3.5 billion years when the sun is 40% hotter.

In 3.5 billion years the Andromeda Galaxy may collide with ours and may wipe out some solar systems.

The Bible is full of prophecy that has come true - proved by archaelogical and historical findings, a lot of which came about only in the last 50 or so years. The Bible has more prophecy that is coming true right before our very eyes! It's amazing! There is very little Bible prophecy left and it all deals with end time events. If you truly want to know, go to the following website and take their free Bible Prophecy studies. They are FASCINATING!

The Earth will never come to an end. But the bad people in it will. And only God knows the hour of when it will happen, but it's not far away.

There shall be no destruction if you are thinking of a nuclear war that shall destroy the planet. What we are witnessing at the moment is the last thrashes of a dying man - wars are evidence of the ego trying to assert itself...but egotistical ways are dying out...

To understand the 'end of the world' one must understand that 'the world' represents a corrupt system and "heaven' represents a system established on Spiritual consciousness and the Universal Law of God.

The 'world' ends when its people choose Love instead of hate, when each individual kindles the Fire of God in their hearts and by its cleansing power frees themselves from the 'ways of the world.'

The 'Fire' that destroys the world that you may read of or hear about 'prophesied' is not bombs, but Love as its cleansing, healing power makes one immune to the 'ways of the world.'

We only have one enemy and that is the ego; work to overcome your own ego and you will reveal within yourself the stream of Living water that issues from the very source of Life itself.

The Living water will inspire you to 'walk in the way' that leads to the revelation of God in You.

The concern that everyone has about everyone else is a deception... each one must seek the Kingdom within and when we find it, we shall have something worthwhile to contribute to the world.

In Light, Love and Peace

Probably in a few million million years when the sun goes nova. Don't make any plans for an end of the earth party, since you wouldn't be here to see it happen.

The earth will not" come to an end". However, all the BS that's happening on it will, in God's own time.
