i was up all night. every one else in the house was asleep. i live in a fairly compact apartement except for a hall that leads to the front door. after my mom woke up we were both walking around and we would have seen someone near the door. at one point my mom looked at the door and saw that it was wide open.
we leave it locked at night. one of the locks can only be opened from the inside or with a key. i didn't open the door and my mom didn't open the door. the button that keeps the door knob from being turned from the outside was disabled.
there was no one in the house even though it couldn't have been open for more then a minute. anybody who tried to sneak in and left would have made noise moving that fast in a house they didn't know.

this happened 20 minutes ago. i was up all night, i couldn't have sleepwalked.
if anyone else in the house suddenly started to sleepwalk i would have seen.
i know for a fact they i closed all the locks the night before.
locks may malfunction but they don't throw themselves open, turn buttons and open doors all the way.
if you have a scientific explanation for this, that is what i would like to hear.

I don't believe in the supernatural. I think that everything is natural. We, as humans simply call things "super"natural when we don't understand them. Whether there was a physical reason or one from another dimension, I still feel that it is simply natural.

There is no occult. There is no supernatural. There are no ghosts, goblins, werewolves, vampires or other spooky creatures.

Now, as for your situation, unless you can verify that you were sitting in the hallway, all night long and watching the door and witness the locks unlock themselves and the door simply open then I might believe that something spooky happened. Other than that, the last person in the house failed to lock the door and, since humans are creatures of habit and never enjoy assuming blame that person insisted that they locked the door.

I've had this happen hundreds of times in my own house. I've actually watched my father come in the house, leave his keys in the door, close the door behind him and forget to put the alarm on.

A few hours later he comes downstairs and yells at either myself or my brother for not putting the alarm on. When we tell him that he was the last person in the house he insists that he locked the door. That's typically when we open the door, toss him his keys and walk away.

It was a human error and nothing more.

Just because you don't know something, that doesn't become proof of the boogeyman, sky pixies, aliens, or telekinetic dog poop.

Unknowns are evidence of nothing. If you want me to believe in the "supernatural" then come back with evidence that we can all observe, that we can replicate, and for which there isn't a more parsimonious answer. (As many other have pointed out, there are many simpler explanations that are 1000 times more likely and don't involve invoking a poltergeist to explain what seems strange to you).

When you can meet that standard of proof, let us know.
Until then, remember that unknowns are unknowns... nothing more. They constitute proof of nothing.

So, between the options you have:

- The probable: someone at your house did it.
- The improbable: someone else (flesh and bones) did it.
- The impossible (or at least that what hasn't been verified as possible): some supernatural event / being did it.

You decided to pick the impossible.

I've know people who always do this, they always tend to attach some apparent unexplained phenomena to the supernatural, and usually, it ends being the most simple and probable explanation. And if you can't explain it, do not attach the event to the unknow, simple accept you can't explain it.

Stuff like that used to happen to me all the time. Back when I was interested in witchcraft and vampires and stuff.

These spirits are none other than demons, masquarading as ghosts, poltergeists, etc. They plagued me until I gave my life to God.

Demons can and will manipulate the physical world. Especially if by so doing they can lead you away from God. Having experienced this, I don't understand people who think that they can control these demons simply by waving an athame around in the air and muttering a few words. It's ridiculous. These demons may allow you to think that you are controlling them if it suits their purposes, but I know people who were in deep, and I know the true story.

These demons are dangerous. If you want to be rid of them, give it to God. He is stronger than any of Satan's minions.

There are a lot of things that happen in our world that aren't easy to explain. Sometimes its human mistakes, we do forget sometimes. Maybe it was something we can't explain. Keep a record of any other strange things happenings. Do some research on the building, see if there have been deaths there, and just enjoy the fact that you are exploring the unknown. Don't worry, ghosts don't hurt people. (not as a rule)

There are several explanations.
You forgot to close it.
It was latched poorly and the higher pressure in the house (warm) and the lower pressure outside (cool) popped it open.
You disturbed a burglar.
But to say that a "supernatural" explanation is required is beyond childish.
After all, what do you think that people in the middle ages would have said about modern magic tricks?
Grow up.

The supernatural is very real. I am concerned that you may be inviting some of this activity into your life. I am referring to your user name, which could be associated with the occult.

The people that I know that have dabbled in the occult are thrilled at first because of the reality of supernatural power. Later, they just want to be freed from the oppression as it consumes their life.

I don't want to sound preachy, but your question concerns me.
Will you consider what I have said?

What is more likely, that a ghost opened the door, or that a flesh and blood person did?

There is nothing supernatural about a door being left open.

I believe you! When I was little I lived house that people say hunted house and the house was big like in the movies. We don't really believe it. I heard voices and like black shadows. I thought it was just a dream every night and then when we came here my parent said," we buy that house because it's cheap and then we know it was hunted. We didn't tell you because we don't want to scared you".
But I don't really believe in ghost.

Either one of you left the door open, or you were about to get robbed. an asteroid hitting your neighbours house and knocking the door open from the force of the impact is more probable than it opening by itself.
