Go to eBay and pick up something cheaper to learn with. Lenses can get into a lot of money. You can get some great packages to start learning about 35mm. Don't get me wrong I own 3 Nikon's and they are great but remember it's the photographer not the camera that takes a great picture. Of course if you have money to burn get the best you can afford and the best of luck.

Go to a local camera store and see if thay have one you can rent, that way you can see for your self if you like it.

A 18-55mm is not going to be very effective for close up photography. It will be good for landscaps and such. It might work for portraits, but a little more zoom, like 70 or 80mm might be better for you. Nikon has one that goes from 18-70mm and that's what I use for portraits and love it.

Hope this helps!

If you are mainly doing portraits, the D50 w/ 18-55mm lense would be perfect for you. However, if you ever want to expand, you are going to need a bigger lense. 55mm won't be good for telephoto shots.

Can you stretch as far as the Nikon D200?
The D50 or D70 aren't a patch on it.
If not definitely the D70s or Canon 350D

Olympus OM-4 or Olympus OM-2. For portrait photography I would suggest a 100mm lens, the fastest you can afford. Please note the above are SLR film cameras and are no longer made. If you want digital, go with the Olympus E series.

Its a good camera, but I would go one step up to the the D70. Its very user friendly and provides great color.

Go to Ebay and pickup a NikonD100 which is virtually Identical to the D70.

On ebay I would be shocked if they were over $400 dollars. My wife has one and it has paid for itself.
