Keep your energy levels high -- this mean plenty of carbohydrates -- especially if you are increasing your mileage. You'll want rices, pastas, fruit and breads. Avoid the high-protein diets as they tend to deplete you of energy.

Also, be sure you keep adequately hydrated. Gatorade is a solid choice. It is relatively low in calories (compared to soda) and helps keep your body hydrated.

Also, don't shy away from protein. You'll need some to rebuild muscle tissue that is broken down during training. In addition, healthy fat choices (advocadoes, olive oil, etc) are also excellent choices.

Another important nutrient is calcium, as this will help repair bone tissue. This is especially important for women.

You might want to pick up some issues of Runners World (http://www.runnersworld.com). Each month they have an article on nutrition by Liz Applegate (http://www.lizapplegate.com ).

Good luck.

I'm a runner too. First off, TONS of water. Fruit is really good energy food before a run, and be sure you get something with a lot of protein after your workout to recover.
