Ubuntu distribution is aorund 700 Mb. It's smaller then others like Fedora, Suse, Mandriva, Slackware because it only integrates GNOME desktop!
A very small distribution is damnsmalllinux! It's only 50 Mb and if you're not interested in good looks you'll love it!
You might also want to try FreeBSD (which is aorund 500 mb)!
Another possibility is MINIX, which is still available for free on the internet! It's the base on which Linux was first created (but it's not Linux!!!). It may look and feel like it! MINIX was the first free distribution made after UNIX... The package has 300 Mb so you could try it!
