try something that only couples would do, like go out to a fancy dinner or try to ask her out somewhere. just the two of you. if she suggests that she brings this friend, tell her you'd just like to go with her alone... on a date...
basically, you'll just need to step it up a notch. flirt a little, call her (most guys don't do this). ask her what she's doin or that you miss her... simplest ways of flirting... she'll only catch on that you're going to the next level only if you show her.
as to telling her directly... trust me... DON'T DO IT... it's too much for her to handle suddenly. even though she's your friend, you're at stage 0 of the relationship. you wouldn't just go up to a hot girl and say "I like you so much" or "I love you". That's creepy dude.
What if she doesn't feel the same way yet?
basically, you got to get the wheel moving first. you wouldn't just go from neutral to 5th gear if you're driving right? or if you're weight training, you wouldn't lift 100lbs weights right away.
start slow and ask her out and flirt with her, then step it up when you see hints. take her out more often and try to always get a chance to be alone with her, like taking her home or calling her.
old fashioned, yes, but this is the sure fire way to get out of the friend zone. otherwise, it's just too risky and you may lose her as a friend if you just come up to her and say you like her immediately.
