i guess he would be more happy to spend some time with you, then with a book... it's so impersonal.
the best gift for my grand father(80) was a picture with all family members... and we all came to his birthday...to make this picture. that's really something, cuz we live all far away from each other...and it was the first time that the whole family (four generations) came together...
make a CD, or get an an old, rare record (if he has a record-player of course), with his favorite music from his youth.
if he likes writing, gift him a nice, good quality ?(note?)-book to write his memoirs... ask him to do so, believe me, you would be surprised and inspired after reading it.
on the first page you can put his, and your grandmothers picture.
you know him and his interests, so be a bit more personal... even if you do not have a very close relationship with him. he is one of the reasons you exist... come on, and his age 82... should be honored too. so, book is a very bad idea!

If he has any hobbies or interests I would try for something that applied to those. If he doesn't have hobbies or interests I would try to find a book written about what life was like when he was a young man...which would be life in the 30's or 40's. Something nostaligic like that normally brings back great memories and stories from his youth, especially if the book contains lots of pictures. Sometimes you can get lucky and find a book written about the city he grew up in or near during that period of time with pictures. If not, there might be a book available that gives details and pictures of the cars from that era.

i'd say some thing thoughtful which incorporates a visit with you doing some thing he enjoys: Ball sport and a chew to eat or visit a museum (war museum) etc even with the certainty that his pastime might want to be. His time and a even as with him is the most respected present. study from him and discover solutions to questions that no man or woman might want to have an answer to after he's lengthy gone. i'm confident he can inform you plenty good things and he will be apprechiative that you took the time to spend with him and communicate. have a good time with a even as jointly. Grandparents are an fantastically good aspect and this style of wealth of comprehend-how and international adventure. Its a treasure it fairly is ignored even as it truly is lengthy gone believe me. Sorry i comprehend its no longer fairly a present however it is the present of existence and fairly properly worth giving.

How about a "grandparents journal"? Its a book that guides the peson with questions and fill-in-the-blank to retell their lives, bring back old memories, and cool stuff that us fast-paced bratty grandkids never think of asking about until its too late. Go to http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b/103-4957370-1061415?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=grandparent+journal
for a wide selection.

I got my dad a 'Dad Book' one time. It is a book where he can write his history, favorite stories, put pictures in, basically something to write and record his life experiences and favorite quotes, etc. I thought that it was a nice thing because perhaps one day he could give that to me or my daughter in order to keep a family history and to help future generations to know him and who he is/was.

Since we don't know much about him, find something he likes. My grandpa is older, and he's a farmer, we got him a book about old tractors. It had pictures of them restored and everyhting. He loved it.
